Women Artists of the Great Basin featured in Capital City Arts Initiative’s illustrated talk
The Capital City Arts Initiative’s illustrated talk, Women Artists of the Great Basin, by Reno artist and author, Mary Lee Fulkerson, is now available online. The event is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors speakers’ series; all future talks will be recorded and presented online.
In her Women Artists of the Great Basin talk, Fulkerson will discuss how artists find connections despite living in a dramatically vast 200,000 square mile area, and how artists achieve success and fulfillment despite great odds as well as statistics that tell a different story.

During her interview with each artist, she asked, “What transformational experience(s) led you to where you are today, and what experiences have made you strong?” Fulkerson emphasizes that the artists’ stories are the essence of the book. She states that these women are pioneers; they kept their dreams alive.
Contemporary artist, Fulkerson represented Nevada in the book Craft in America: Celebrating the Work of the Hand. Her sculptures are in private and corporate collections, including The White House in Washington, D.C., and are featured in numerous books and publications.
She authored Women Artists of the Great Basin (2017) and Weavers of Tradition and Beauty: Basketmakers of the Great Basin (1995), both published by the University of Nevada Press. She also wrote A Basket of Blessings and was a contributing author to Weaving Naturally in the Great Basin, both which were published by Great Basin Basketmakers. In 2018, Women Artists received the Willa Award for Creative Non-Fiction from Women Writing the West. She earned a BA degree as an Art major with a Journalism minor from University of Nevada, Reno.
