Paul Roth and the SPLIT Trio Perform Jazz Improvisation April 28 at Plan: B
Saxophonist Paul N. Roth, 2011-12 Nevada Arts Council Performing Arts Artist Fellow, brings his group, SPLIT trio, to Plan: B Microlounge, 318 N. Carson Street, Carson City, on Saturday, April 28, at 8:00 p.m. Joining him are two of Los Angeles' most creative young improvising musicians: bassist Jake Rosenzweig and percussionist Mike Lockwood. Admission is free.
Roth is spending his fellowship year in Berlin, Germany, where he is active in the city's cutting-edge improvised music scene. His work with SPLIT combines elements of American modern jazz and European improvised music, also drawing from genres as diverse as contemporary classical, new minimalism, noise, electronic, and experimental music. Besides the Artist Fellowship, Roth has been recognized by Downbeat magazine, the American Society of Composers, Carnegie Hall, and GRIM-Marseille Center for Experimental Music. He was on the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno before heading to Europe. For more information, visit his website at paulnroth.com.
The SPLIT trio presents a fresh take on the traditional sax-bass-drums lineup. Their music flows through, around, and beyond the jazz tradition, with sounds, timbres, and conceptions that keep listeners surprised and engaged. Roth, Rosenzweig, and Lockwood are a formidable combination. Their careful balance between adventurous composition and free-wheeling improvisation is a delicate, eclectic blend of their NYC, Paris, LA, and Berlin experiences.
