Dense smoke from southern Sierra fire continues around Carson region; Red Flag Warning goes up for Monday

UPDATE 3:05PM: Areas of smoke and haze from wildfires will persist into Monday with improved conditions expected Monday night through Wednesday, forecasters say. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, from 1 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday for much of the Carson City region.

After a night washed out with a deep sepia haze resulting from the Creek Fire burning in the southern Sierra, the dense smoke that made its way into northern and western Nevada Saturday night that caused degraded air quality throughout the region now appears to be lifting, according to the National Weather Service.

Drift smoke continues to filter into Carson City region, Heat Advisory goes up for much of western Nevada

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. Friday through 8 pm. Sunday for the greater Reno area, Carson City, Carson Valley in Douglas County, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties as well as the Western Nevada Basin and range including Pyramid Lake, Northern Washoe County.

Forecasters say we can expect consecutive days of high temperatures in most cities near or above 100 with overnight lows in the 60s. Record high Temperatures are likely, with potential for a new record for the latest 100 degrees at Reno.

Carson City area weather: Strong thunderstorms possible, Red Flag Warning extended

UPDATE 4:39PM: A Flash Flood Warning was issued at 4:28 p.m. for Douglas and Lyon counties and Carson City. Also, firefighters are responding to a number of wild land fire starts in Douglas County. Go here for updates on the fire situation.

Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are possible through 9 p.m. Tuesday across the eastern Sierra, western Nevada and Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service.

Levitt AMP Carson City summer concert series moves tentative start date

The Levitt AMP Carson City summer concert series was supposed to have started on June 6. Because of the circumstances, we have been able to move our start date to July 11 and the last concert will be Sept. 12.

In light of ever-increasing Coronavirus fears and the CDC recommendations that people, especially those in high-risk groups, avoid crowds and public gatherings; Catmandu has regretfully decided to postpone the Birthday Bash party scheduled for March 28 at the Carson Nugget until June or July.

Cool, showery weather, with periods of steadier precipitation, will continue into the Memorial Day weekend. However, snow levels are forecast to rise above 7,500 feet from Wednesday evening onward for diminishing snowfall impacts in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service.

New tenants sought for downtown Carson City space that formerly housed Sassafras

The principal owners of the building that once housed Sassafras restaurant in downtown Carson City have asked a commercial real estate company to help them find a new restaurant to lease the space at 318 North Carson Street.

The realtor, Jack Brower, said Wednesday that he didn’t know anything about what happened to the tenant that was supposed to go in. He said he was recently asked by the building’s owners to find a new tenant.

Carson City recognized for Partnership in Action crime prevention programs

The Carson Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Carson City will be receiving a placement of 5th in the nation for communities of comparable size for its community wide crime prevention programs in 2014. This accomplishment was achieved even though a substantial rainfall prevented our August National Night Out in Mills Park. That cancelation was the first in 12 years.

Get Your Jazz on Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center with Jazz Jam

All Jazz fans, Jazz musicians and past Plan:b supporters, please mark your calendars for Saturday, Dec. 6. Regular past PB hosts, Cherie and John Shipley and Neil Strocchio will reunite to present a fun Jazz Jam reunion at the Carson City Brewery Arts Center in the "Front Room" of the Black Box.

The Black Box is a hip intimate theater area in BAC. Cherie has helped create a "jazzy bar lounge", designed specifically for this event.

As many of you may have heard a favorite, downtown restaurant, Sassafras is being forced to relocate. The word spread throughout our community and one question was being asked “how can we help?”

I had a chance to attend a meeting of volunteers from the community to help organize a benefit to help Save our Sassafras. I then asked Owner, Scott Owen Doerr, what he wanted people to know. This is what he had to say:

July 4 holiday weekend activities lined up for Carson City and surrounding areas

The July 4 holiday weekend has arrived and there are plenty of activities going on today through the weekend around Carson City.

The Nevada Rural Counties RVSP carnival runs through the weekend at Mills Park. Tonight RSVP will host a spectacular fireworks celebration over Carson City to go along with its 22nd annual holiday carnival.

Best Taste winner Sassafras looking for a new home

Winning Best Taste for this year's Taste of Downtown is bittersweet for the owners of Sassafras, as their landlord has given them until the end of July to vacate that space.

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.

Carson City dignitaries gather for annual bike ride through town

Carson City elected leaders and officials including new city manager-designate Nick Marano lined pedaled the west side of town Monday morning for the annual Carson City "Celebrity" bike ride.

Hosted by Carson City bicycle group Muscle Powered, the spirited group of cyclists dusted off their bikes and shared the road with motorists as part of a month of activities planned through the bicycle advocacy group Muscle Powered.

Fans of the iconic film "12 Angry Men" will be in for a special treat tonight as Plan B: Microlounge in Carson City shows the film for free.

Before the film, at 6 p.m., the cast of Proscenium Players "12 Angry Jurors" will make an appearance, in costume and in character. The director of the play, which opens August 16 at Silver State Charter School, will also be on hand to answer questions.
