Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad
An extra-curricular activity at Eagle Valley Middle School, 11 Carson City students prepared for three months at after school meetings and on their own to compete in the state Science Olympiad held March 8 in Las Vegas. The team is coached by Josh Billings, 8th grade science teacher with assistance from family and teachers.
Science Olympiad is geared for school teams of up to 15 students who then enter contests for 1-3 person sub-teams in a variety of science and technology based events. Competition is held across the country and culminates in May with the National Competition, this year, at the University of Central Florida. Middle school teams consist of students in 7th through 9th grades. Medals are given to 1st – 3rd place in each event.
The Nevada State competition was held March at Rancho High School in Las Vegas. Nevada will be represented again this year by the 1st place team from Hyde Park Science and Math Academy (LV). Other schools competing were: 2nd -The Davidson Academy of Nevada (Reno), 3rd – Southern Highlands Preparatory School, 4th – Eagle Valley Middle School (Carson City), 5th- Coral Academy of Science (LV), 6th- Pinecrest Academy of Nevada (Henderson), 7th - Dilworth STEM Academy (Sparks), 8th – Swope Middle School (Reno), 9th - Keller Middle School (LV). Hyde Park and Dilworth each entered 2 teams with one being designated for the team awards for a total of 11 teams in the middle school competition.
