An approaching low pressure system will bring strong, gusty winds Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of the Western Nevada Sierra Front.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. The Carson City IHOP on South Carson Street has officially shut its doors and the building is set to be demolished. At this time, IHOP corporate said they have no plans to reopen another IHOP chain in Carson City, but they do have three locations in Reno and one in South Lake Tahoe.

With a strong cold front pushing into the region that will bring gusty winds and low humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northern and western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region. Weather conditions will be especially dangerous along the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes.

Chambered for Charity, an unincorporated non-profit, invites community members to sign up for the first Aim to Cure Sporting Clays Shoot on Sept. 21, 2019 at the Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City, Nev.

Chambered for Charity was formed by the women of two local Reno companies, Legacy Sports International and Reno Cerakote. Their mission is “to enhance the lives of others through charitable donations while promoting the safe, responsible use of firearms.”

Events around the capital city include a monthly lunch series at the Nevada State Library featuring author, professor and poet Lindsay Wilson, a Sierra Nevada Forum discussion on Nevada's Native Tribes, past, present and future; heart and vascular screenings through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, archery at Centennial Park, family craft and movie night at Carson City Library and more.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, lost their lives in a senseless crime, when a man entered the Carson City IHOP and opened fire.

Now, eight years later, their memories are kept alive by their friends and family, and by the community they called home.

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two rifle matches on Saturday, September 7th, 8AM to 1PM. The matches will consist of a "Mini Palma" (a 100 yard match suitable for most .22 rifles) and a Vintage Military Rifle Match. Lyon County Sheriff's Office reports an officer involved shooting incident Monday night in Silver Springs in which a suspect was shot and died at the scene of a domestic battery call and a deputy sustained minor injuries.

The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run, walk on Friday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011. The run, walk will start at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 7 a.m.

Two Carson City men were arrested early Thursday morning on Tiger Drive after allegedly beating a man with a baseball bat in front of his toddler during a robbery.

Jose Rivera, 25, and Brandon Sanchez, 21, were arrested after dispatch received a call of a home invasion burglary in progress.

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. Target shooting has become a fairly common cause of wildfires. They've even happened at recommended public shooting ranges. Last year, shooters at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range touched off a 200 acre fire and already this year there have been two small fires there.

On Saturday, August 10th, 8AM to 1PM, the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club hold a series of matches at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range. The matches will consist of an NRA-approved High Power Rifle match, followed by a Bullseye Pistol match.

Heading into Tuesday Aug. 6, which means the safest family celebration of the year at the 17th annual Carson City National Night Out. This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Capital City Hoops, a local non-profit organization, is hosting the second annual Back-to-School Basketball Camp for kids ages 5-15. The event will be held August 5-8 at the MAC Facility at 1860 Russell Way in Carson City from 9 a.m. to noon.

We’ve finally settled into a spectacular Tahoe summer. Like a shooting star, summer is fleeting, with the Fourth of July already in our review mirror. With all the outdoor recreation that summer affords us here at Lake Tahoe, here’s one more experience worth noting.

A firearms training business has expanded in Carson Valley, with the owner having an impressive list of credentials, a team of five instructors and a state of the art classroom.
