Members of the Carson City community gathered Tuesday evening at the September 11 Memorial in Mills Park outside the Pavillion to remember those who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks and to offer prayers and hope.

Gusty winds and low humidity will arrive in the Carson City and Sierra region Tuesday along with a cooling weather pattern, which has prompted the National Service to issue a fire weather watches and warnings.

Tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 8, Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City will be captured by the Pirates of Reno for a full day of dastardly, family-friendly activities beginning at 11 a.m.

Due to extremely dry vegetation and very high fire danger, Eldorado National Forest Supervisor Laurence Crabtree announced that additional fire restrictions will go into effect that will prohibit recreational target shooting beginning Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018. These restrictions will be in effect through Oct. 9, 2018, but could be extended if necessary.

Thursday morning marked seven years since the 2011 IHOP shooting in Carson City, which left three Nevada Guard members and one civilian dead.

Welcome to Thursday Carson City. It is Sept. 6, 2018. Today’s events are related to fitness and hikes, a memorial walk and run, plus art showings and business and family support group meetings.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run and walk this Thursday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011.

Fire officials on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest would like to remind the public the fire danger level is still extreme. Human-caused wildfires are still a major concern heading into the Labor Day weekend and hunting season.

In the fourth fire call of the day, Carson City Fire Department responded Tuesday night to a brush fire at the Stewart Conservation prison area on Snyder Avenue.

Carson High School notched its second win in girl's Sierra League golf action at Sierra Sage on Monday. Carson's 358 was 16 better than second place, Bishop Manogue. Leading Carson again were the Beglin sisters with Jill and Karen both shooting solid rounds.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Don’t worry, you’ve still got four months for your holiday shopping, but Santa needs to hire a few helpers. The annual Polar Express on the V & T is getting ready to steam up and they are auditioning for elves etc. to lend a hand. The Nevada Arts Council has a new exhibit featuring Basque artwork; attend this evening’s artist reception to learn more about these unusual carvings. The ESL at Home program works quietly behind the scenes to bring better English language skills to non-native speakers.

With a cool down of temperatures around the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas this weekend, there are also gusty winds expected to arrive Sunday, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch for much of northern and western Nevada.

Hopefest8 at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center is a free concert featuring folk/pop singer, Tyrone Wells, bringing awareness and raising funds for local patient resources. Lights, camera, action! The Second annual Jukebox Film Festival begins today at the Carson City Community Center. Two full days of features, documentaries, and short films with music as the uniting theme will be shown at the Carson City Community Center: 30 unique titles representing 29 different filmmakers from countries around the world. Blood Drum Spirit, a jazz band with an African influence, is the focus of one of those films and will be performing for free at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint this evening.

Wednesdays can be brutal: more than two full days until we reach the weekend. Don’t dismay, there’s something cooking midweek that might just keep you going. The Second annual Jukebox International Film Festival begins tomorrow with a two full days of music-centric documentaries, narratives, videos, and shorts.

TUESDAY, August 21: Things to do in Carson City

UPDATE TUESDAY 9AM: According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, investigators determined the Rifle Range fire was started by target shooting. It burned a total of 218 acres. Crews will continue to work throughout today suppressing hot spots and reinforcing containment lines. Full containment is expected by 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

CCFD acknowledges the Nevada Division of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management - Nevada for assisting with the fire and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and East Fork Fire Protection District for mutual aid in covering CCFD stations during the fire.

UPDATE 7:27PM: The Rifle Range fire is 50 percent contained with forward progress stopped. Carson City Fire Department will be releasing some fire crews this evening. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Educator Chad Hicks has been appointed as Director of Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment in Educational Services for the Carson City School District. He began his role with the district earlier this summer.

It’s a happening day around Carson City. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival makes an appearance downtown with Under the Radar in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, followed by the Mile High Jazz Band in McFadden Square. Head up the short hill to Silver City for a special hands-on Engineering activity for kids. Join local author Cindy Sutherland for this month’s edition of the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Nevada State Library and Archives. Freshman, and their parents, are welcomed to Carson High School this morning for orientation, an overview of policies, and a tour.

With a chance for thunderstorms and winds expected to kick up with them, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch covering much of the Carson City region beginning Tuesday afternoon.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team, in conjunction with the Tri-County Gang Unit, arrested a suspect Friday night connected with the May 7 fatal shooting of Joseph Jarratt in Dayton.

With less than a month until the doors open, Jukebox International Film Festival (JIFF), the only festival to feature films with music as a central driving theme, has announced that two bands appearing in two films screening at the festival will be appearing live in Carson City that week.

Nevada Outdoorsmen in Wheelchairs has announced its 2018 hunt participants. The upcoming hunt commences in Elko, Nev., on August 22, 2018 and will celebrate the organization’s 10th Anniversary. Selected from this year’s pool of applicants are: Tony Sosby from Paris, Kentucky and Elko resident, Lizzy Pritchett.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives have determined that the Sunday afternoon report of a shooting in Carson City at the I-580 and College Parkway exit was falsely reported by the victim, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

UPDATE: 6:12PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has released the following statement on the suspected shooting that occurred on Interstate 580 Sunday afternoon:

Nevada's State Forester Fire Warden Kacey KC on Friday ordered fire and travel restrictions for Northern and Eastern Nevada state and private lands, including state parks.

Noting a potentially dangerous fire weather situation with gusty winds and low humidity ahead, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning from Friday afternoon to Saturday night for Carson City, the Sierra and throughout much of the entire western and northern Nevada region.

Under somewhat clearer skies, gusty winds and low humidity are expected to arrive Thursday afternoon, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning from 1 to 9 p.m. and a fire weather watch through Saturday.

CARSON CITY — Increased fuels due to the wet winter and spring, drying vegetation, high fuel loading, and increasing daytime temperatures have prompted the Bridgeport and Carson Ranger Districts on the Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest to announce the implementation of fire restrictions beginning Saturday, August 4.
