Ever messed up? That should be a rhetorical question. Because, the truth is, we all have. We have all fallen short. Sometimes the mistakes are small. Other times they are big. At the time of a mistake, we reach a crossroads. Do we hide in shame and continue to make the mistake worse?

The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range will be closed for construction projects beginning Wednesday, May 30 to Thursday, June 7, according to the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department.

Today is definitely an out-doorsy kind of day: two Muscle Powered hikes, the Ladies Ash Canyon Bike Ride, and the annual Bike Month Full Moon Night Mountain Bike Ride. Early voting for the 2018 Primary has begun, and all registered Carson City voters can head down to the Clerks office in the Courthouse to cast their ballot. If you’re in Minden, or up for a short drive, check out the Farmers Market on Esmerelda Street. It runs from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., so you’ll have plenty of time to grab something fresh to throw in with dinner.

Western Nevada College may be finished with its semester, but they don’t just shutter the doors and pack it in. Go check out the Bristlecone Art Gallery where you’ll find a plethora of True-Grit inspired artwork: it’s pretty spectacular what these artists have done with a simple deck of playing cards. It may be a little too wet for this evening’s Muscle Powered hike, but you’ll find other opportunities to burn off a little steam. Try Carson Lanes Country/Pop Dance Night, or try your hand at all-ages trivia at the Fox Brewpub or Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

Hello Carson City! It’s been a bit since I’ve written a column. May has been a whirlwind, which started with a pre-graduation meditation retreat with Mindful USC. I was honored to be one of two alumni present on a silent meditation retreat with 30 people. The remaining 28 were USC professors and employees. After the retreat, I worked in Los Angeles for two days before participating in commencement activities.

A 77-year-old Yerington man has been identified in the officer involved fatal shooting Saturday night south of Carson City in northern Douglas County in which a Douglas County sheriff's deputy was injured.

UPDATE: 12:40AM: One suspect in Saturday night's officer-involved shooting on Shadow Lane in the Sunridge neighborhood of Northern Douglas County is deceased, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has Tweeted on Twitter.
Four Sheriff's deputies were involved in the incident and one deputy was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office and Nevada Division of Investigations are handling the investigation.

UPDATE: 11:35PM: The Record-Courier in Gardnerville has reported that one person is reported dead and a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy was injured from an officer-involved shooting incident on Shadow Lane in Sunridge.

Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

A law enforcement sweep Thursday in Carson City led to more arrests as part of an investigation into Monday’s fatal shooting at a Dayton shopping center parking lot, Lyon County authorities announced Friday.

A second batch of photos was released Thursday afternoon showing two males believed to be involved in Monday's fatal shooting at a Dayton shopping center parking lot.

UPDATE 2:13PM: The 17-year-old male considered a person of interest in connection to a homicide Monday night at a Dayton shopping center parking lot was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon in Reno near Hug High School.
Malik Avila, 17, was sought by Douglas and Lyon County authorities following the fatal shooting. DSCO Sgt. Bernadette Smith confirmed it was Avila who was taken into custody.

Hundreds gathered on the grounds of the Nevada Capitol mall Thursday afternoon at the site of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for an annual tribute to fallen peace officers in the state.

I’m ready for spring. My allergies don’t seem to be as enthusiastic, but I love watching our valley awaken from its gray winter slumber. Muscle Powered’s guided hikes are a great way to explore our town and learn about the many trails hidden in the hills. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club gets an extra-special visitor at tonight’s film viewing; STRAZZ, the Carson City Symphony’s Youth String Orchestra will be performing before ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ lights up the screen. Sandie LaNae and Arlene La Ferry are the featured authors at Browsers Corner Book Store this evening.

A new local band is set to debut in Carson City with musical sound that has been 40 years in the making.

Stonewood, an acoustical vocal harmony band assembled locally in Carson City, takes the A to Zen stage on Saturday, May 5 for a break-out concert.

It seems, this week, so many I know have lost something. Whether it’s a job, health, a relationship, or an expectation, loss is real. It’s emotionally hard. In some cases, it’s a crisis. The Senior Center recently hosted ‘Carson’s Got Talent,’ so they know the caliber of performers hidden in our midst. Auditions for their annual show, Senior Follies, continue this evening and are open to all ages. CCAI’s art exhibit in the Community Development Building on E. Proctor features work from several high school artists. Join them in celebrating this young talent at a reception tonight. The day should be gorgeous; a hike with Muscle Powered is the perfect way to embrace the spring.

Well, we won’t see any wet stuff today, but the clear skies could mean a nip to the air. You can join Muscle Powered for one of today’s two walks, but I won’t blame you if you’d prefer an indoor activity. Join the Carson Library for coloring night; they have plenty of pictures to choose from. Bobbie Ann Howell is at the center of today’s Artist Reception at the Nevada Arts Council. You’ll hear her discuss her exhibit ‘Vistas and Viewpoints.’ Head down to Pizza Factory to lend a hand to Mark Twain Elementary School: just make sure to mention you are there for the fundraiser.

For the second straight weekend, gun rights supporters rallied at the Nevada Capitol in downtown Carson City to voice their support for Second Amendment freedom.

Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens recently wrapped up a complicated year-long investigation into the poaching of a large male black bear in the spring of 2017, resulting in formal charges being filed in Dayton Justice Court March 28 by the Lyon County District Attorney’s Office.

A group of pro-Second Amendment demonstrators marched Sunday from Mills Park to the Nevada Capitol, where they lined North Carson Street waving signs and flags in support of gun ownership rights.

With the legislative session less than a year away, emergency management officials are looking at ways to strengthen Nevada’s crisis recovery efforts after a year in which the state responded to several — including the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history and major flooding in the Truckee River.
