Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

The Lyon County Utilities Department discovered a note Tuesday that threatened the sanctity of a well site in the Dayton water service area. Utilities staff notified the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and a criminal investigation was initiated, said County Manager Jeff Page.

William "Bill" Clarence Thornton, father, attorney, pilot, part-time cowboy, corny joke-teller, and mentor to many, had his final flight on Tuesday, November 5th, 2019 after gracefully charting his course with Parkinson's Disease for over twenty years. Bill died peacefully at home in hospice care surrounded by loved ones.

RENO — Work For Warriors Nevada is set to host its Law Enforcement and First Responder Career Fair in Reno at Idlewild Park in the California Building on Friday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Carson City IHOP on South Carson Street has officially shut its doors and the building is set to be demolished. At this time, IHOP corporate said they have no plans to reopen another IHOP chain in Carson City, but they do have three locations in Reno and one in South Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY — In the final year of his 42-year career and his 10th as Nevada's adjutant general, Brig. Gen. William Burks will be this year's keynote speaker at the Nevada National Guard's 21st annual Flag Day ceremony and U.S. Army's 244th birthday celebration 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s state museums are once again taking part in the national Blue Star Museums program, providing free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families program, now in its 10th year, launched the 2019 program on Saturday, May 18 – Armed Forces Day – and it will stay in effect through the Labor Day Weekend.

CARSON CITY — One Army Reservist was killed and four Nevada Army National Guardsmen were injured in a military vehicle rollover accident during training early Wednesday morning at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana, according to a Nevada State Public Affairs Officer for the Nevada National Guard.

Carson High School’s graduating seniors who are enlisting in the military will be recognized during the Salute to Scholars ceremony this Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m.

UPDATE 1:22PM: The truck is now being assessed by East Fork Fire and has been taken back to the Douglas County Transfer Station where it had originally left from, officials said. The Nevada National Guard Civil Support Team is conducting a Hazmat assessment at the Douglas County Transfer Station, which is now closed indefinitely. There are no reported injuries at this time. Highway 395 is now open in both directions.

UPDATE 12:35PM: The scene has been declared safe and the roadway has been reopened in both directions, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol via Twitter. There is no longer a hazmat situation.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers were at the scene of a potential hazmat situation late Tuesday morning south of Carson City in Douglas County.

Sergio Trejo Jr., a Las Vegas native and first-generation college graduate, visited several Carson City schools recently to share his inspiring story about his admittance to medical school. Trejo presented to more than 150 students.

On Monday morning the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada National Guard teamed up for an active shooter training exercise, including the unveiling of a new detection technology.

Nevada Humane Society is proud to honor and thank dedicated service men and women by offering free pet adoptions for members of the military and their immediate families on Veterans Day, this Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of the Battle Born Memorial to Nevada’s military fallen on Friday, Nov. 9 on the state capitol grounds in Carson City.

The U.S. Department of Defense office recently recognized Nevada employers for their outstanding service and support to Silver State veterans with their Seven Seals Award.

Thursday morning marked seven years since the 2011 IHOP shooting in Carson City, which left three Nevada Guard members and one civilian dead.

Tech Sgt. Rob Webster of Carson City is celebrating his retirement after 26 years of military service with the Air National Guard serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Webster is the owner of Webster Wealth Management and board member for Arts for Children of Nevada.

Battleborn Social on Carson Street will host an event to celebrate his retirement on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. A portion of the proceeds for the signature drink will go to Arts for Children of Nevada. All are welcome.
