Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and her office received the “Patriotic Employer” award given by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The Award recognizes the Nevada Attorney General’s Office for “supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.”

“We are thankful for the exceptional service of our employees who are also reservists and National Guard members,” said Masto. “We are honored to be nominated for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Patriotic Employer Award.”

Alyssa Harrison spent 10 months waiting for the day her husband would return to Nevada from Afghanistan.

That day arrived Sunday when Harrison among hundreds to greet the 13 Nevada Army National Guard members who returned to Reno-Tahoe International Airport from Afghanistan.

Nevada has been picked as one of six locations to be a center for drone development in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday.

As a drone development site, the state would benefit by providing thousands of jobs with an average wage of approximately $62,000; an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact in present dollars; and an estimated $125 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

More than 500 Nevada National Guard federal technicians statewide will return to work Tuesday after being furloughed last week due to a partial government shutdown.

Normal operations and support activities will resume with no impact on the Guard’s ability to respond to federal contingencies or state and local emergencies, according to a news release posted to Facebook. The shutdown’s effect on the Guard has been largely transparent to the majority of Nevada’s citizens.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

Soldiers and Airmen of the Nevada Guard are set to participate in an informal memorial run/walk to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting on Sept. 6, 2011 in Carson City.

There will be a regional hazardous materials (hazmat) exercise Thursday at Diamond Peak Ski Resort on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

The exercise begins 9 a.m. will run throughout the day. The drill is organized by the 92nd Civil Support Team from Las Vegas. Other entities participating will be the 9th Civil Support Team from Los Angeles, Placer County HAZMAT Team, Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad, Washoe County Consolidated Bomb Squad, and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.

A portion of the Carson City Freeway will be closed Monday beginning at 8 p.m. and running through 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, city officials said.

The Carson City Freeway will be closed from the U.S. Highway 50 East/William Street interchange to the Fairview Drive interchange because of maintenance.

Detours will be signed routing southbound freeway traffic west on William Street and south on to Carson Street. If necessary, the freeway will be closed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, during the same hours, until the project is complete.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid said Wednesday on the floor of the U.S. Senate that he supports an assault weapons ban, limits on high-capacity ammunition clips and polices to improve access to mental health services. He spoke of mass shootings that have happened across the country and close to home in Carson City.

"As the case of the Carson City, Nevada IHOP tragedy reveals, the deficiencies in this nation’s mental health treatment system are another important part of the discussion about how to prevent gun violence," Reid said on the Senate floor. "We have simply not done a good job of providing funding for and access to mental health services. We have also done a poor job of removing the stigma that keeps many Americas from seeking the treatment they need."

Cybersecurity, prevention, community planning, intelligence and public information are among 10 priorities outlined by the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security for future funding, officials announced Friday.
Gov. Brian Sandoval and 16 voting members of the Commission made the recommendations, according to a news release.

Nevada Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Anderson Muñoz of Dayton, who was injured by a rocket attack in Afghanistan, received a Purple Heart on Saturday in Reno.
Muñoz, 35, is one of about 50 Nevada Guardsmen to receive a Purple Heart since Sept. 11, 2001. He suffered a ruptured ear drum and concussion during enemy rocket fire on Nov. 18, 2011.

About 400 Nevada guardsmen have begun training at various locations on and off the Las Vegas Strip on New Year's Eve this year for the 12th annual Vigilant Sentinel training exercise. A series of drills simulating emergencies such as extreme weather, power outages, aircraft mishaps, lost climbers and transportation issues will be performed this weekend as part of operation Green Light organized by the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and the the Department of Homeland Security.
Operation Green Light will further develop and strengthen regional partnerships and enhance emergency preparedness, response, and prevention capabilities, according to Nevada Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Gail Powell. Participating counties include Carson City, Douglas, Elko, Humboldt, Lyon, Pershing, Storey and Washoe.

The Lake Tahoe region will celebrates Independence Day holiday with multiple fireworks displays from virtually all points, with the first show set to kick off July 3.
