Flag Day, Army’s 241st birthday celebrated at Nevada Veterans Memorial at state capitol
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 06/14/2016 - 1:10pmNevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.
Nearly doubling last year’s attendance, well over 100 people and many active military personnel attended the ceremony, which featured the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the Army Song, and welcome remarks by emcee Guy Clifton.

Free to attend, the Fair features live music, carnival rides, a car show, County exhibits, civil war reenactments, and more. Free parking can be found at Carson High School.
Nevada addressing suicide as public health crisis
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 9:32pmSuicide has reached epidemic levels in Nevada, according to numbers from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), and the state has been stepping up efforts in recent years to combat the problem.
"We lose more than 500 Nevadans and 100 veterans to suicide per year," said Luana Ritch, Ph.D., a Community Health Planner with the Nevada DPBH. "It's really looking at this now as a public health crisis for Nevada."

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both veterans, attended Wednesday's meeting and highlighted changes to the city's new, improved web site scheduled to go public by the end of May.

Column: Vietnam Veterans are loved
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sun, 04/03/2016 - 6:25amI was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.
While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.
The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

Carson City IHOP shooting victims, survivors remembered in memorial run
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 09/06/2015 - 10:24amDozens of runners and walkers, including Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, took to the streets of the capital city early Sunday for a remembrance run to recognize the victims of the Sept. 6, 2011 shooting at the IHOP in Carson City.
Four years ago Sunday, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which the mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons suffered injuries.
Carson City paramedics better prepared to respond after IHOP shooting
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 09/04/2015 - 11:11pmThe first firefighter/paramedic on the scene, Bob Schreihans will never forget what he saw, heard — even smelled — when he responded to the Sept. 6, 2011, shooting at the Carson City IHOP, where five people were killed and seven injured.
“Some of those things will stick with me forever,” he said. “It changes the way you look at things and the way you operate on a long-term basis to the short-term. I still can’t stand the smell of maple syrup and pancakes.”
It also changed the way he does his job.
