Nevada governor honors Carson City sheriff's deputy Wayne Wheeler with proclamation
Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Wayne Wheeler was recently honored by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval for his 27 years in the military with a day proclaimed in his honor.
The proclamation designated Feb. 12, 2016 as a day of honor for Wheeler, the governor noted he is a "devoted and dedicated Nevadan who has served and protected the community as both a member of law enforcement as well as a member of the nation's armed forces."
Wheeler served in the U.S. Navy from 1988 to 1991, defending the nation in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. After serving in the Navy, Wheeler later joined the Nevada Army National Guard and Air National Guard and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 where he was stationed at Bagram Airfield, the proclamation states.
While stationed in Afghanistan with the 152nd Security Forces Squadron, Deputy Wheeler and his squadron were attacked by enemy forces and Wheeler "displayed remarkable courage and heroism under fire, which he was awarded the prestigious Air Force Combat Medal," the proclamation states.
In addition to his military service, Wheeler has "devoted his life to protecting the community as a member of the Carson City Sheriff's Office, serving in a variety of roles and demonstrating exceptional commitment to law enforcement and public safety initiatives," the proclamation states. "Deputy Wayne Wheeler retired from military service after more than 27 years of devotion to serving and defending America and our way of life."
Wheeler has been a member of the Carson City Sheriff's Office for 17 years.
"The State of Nevada extends deepest thanks and gratitude to Deputy Wayne Wheeler for his many years of service as a true American hero, with profound admiration and appreciation for his role as a defender of freedom and with best wishes for success in his future endeavors," the proclamation concludes.
Friends and family of Wheeler celebrated the proclamation from Gov. Sandoval at J’s Bistro in Dayton on Friday, Feb. 19.
