CHS acknowledges seniors enlisting in the military post-graduation
Carson High School’s graduating seniors who are enlisting in the military will be recognized during the Salute to Scholars ceremony this Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m.
The military serves as a path towards social and economic mobility for some students. The military is both a way to see the world and to learn valuable skills that can be transferred into civilian life, such as leadership, independence, honor, and teamwork. The event will be at Carson High, Senator Square.
The students enlisting in the US Armed Forces represent about 3 percent of the 2019 graduating class. The student commitment is as follows: Six U.S. Army, three Marines, five Air Force, one Navy, and two Nevada Army National Guard.
“Military service is an honor and has been instrumental in my life” stated Yette De Luca, Air Force veteran and the District Work-Based Learning Coordinator, “the five years spent in the USAF afforded me the opportunity to learn responsibility, focus, discipline and two college degrees.” De Luca strongly believes that “the decision to serve in the armed forces should be recognized and celebrated by our schools and community.”
As the district plans events for the next academic year, De Luca will host the district’s inaugural signing days for military commitments and for students entering skilled trades. “Our goal is to recognize and celebrate all students’ skills, abilities, talents, and post-secondary selections.” said De Luca.
