Carson City arrests: Pair jailed after male passenger causes girlfriend to crash vehicle

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly interfering with the driver of a vehicle he was a passenger in, causing it to crash, a sheriff’s deputy said.

The 34-year-old female driver was also arrested for attempting to leave the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor, according to the the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report. The incident happened at 3:05 a.m. in the area of Highway 50 near Asphalt Drive.

According to the arrest report, CCSO deputies were dispatched to the area of the Lyon County and Carson City boundary for a vehicle in which the occupants were involved in a domestic dispute.

A deputy located the vehicle, a newer silver Ford Mustang, and saw that it had crashed into some bushes on the left side of Highway 50.

A 34-year-old female inside the vehicle exited and began to walk away from the scene. She was later arrested for leaving the scene of an accident after being told to stop. She also had a failure to appear warrant issued Nov. 21 out of Carson City Justice Court.

The male passenger was sitting in the right front passenger seat when a deputy made contact with him. He had dried blood on his lips and denied any injuries and refused medical treatment. The deputy asked what happened and the man said he was punched in the face earlier in the evening.

While speaking with the passenger, the deputy could smell an odor of alcohol. The man then told a deputy in an excited utterance that he wanted the driver of the vehicle to stop the car and so he grabbed and manipulated the steering wheel, which caused the vehicle to crash.

He was placed into custody and evaluated by paramedics. He then became combative and began to kick the back seat of the police patrol vehicle. He then told the arresting deputy he wanted to speak. The suspect was read his Miranda warning and said he and his girlfriend’s father got into an argument earlier and he was punched in the face by the man. He said his girlfriend, who was the driver, began to defend her father for punching him in the face, the arrest report states.

He said he wanted the woman to stop the vehicle and so he grabbed the steering wheel, manipulating the controls of the vehicle, which caused it to leave the roadway and crash. He faces a misdemeanor charge of causing interference with driver controls. Bail: $242. Bail for the 34-year-old woman: $852.

In other arrests:
— A 40-year-old Carson City man as arrested Monday, 11:07 p.m. in the area of Highway 50 and Silver State for a misdemeanor warrant issued June 9, 2010 out of Incline Village Justice Court. Bail: $1,050.

— A 30-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Monday, 7:01 p.m. in the 2900 block of Cameron Court for misdemeanor suspicion of domestic battery and obstructing.

According to the arrest report, the woman got into an argument with her boyfriend, allegedly biting him in the chest and then throwing knives at his vehicle.

Investigating deputies observed the man to have blood on his left ear and two blood spots on his shorts. At first the man said the two were arguing and his girlfriend wouldn’t let him leave. When he broke away and was able to get outside into his truck, he said the woman began to throw knives at his vehicle.

Then the victim denied the incident was physical and refused to let officers see the bite mark on his chest. He told officers he must have fallen down, which accounted for the blood on his ear and said he did not want anything to happen with the woman.

The woman was detained in the incident and then became combative with officers. She was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery and misdemeanor obstructing. Deputies located a meat clever in the street behind the man's vehicle. Bail: $1,549.

— An 18-year-old Tracy, Calif., man was arrested Tuesday, 12:40 a.m. in the area of I-580 and College Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI, possession of an ounce of marijuana, minor consumption, possession of drug paraphernalia and a tail lamp violation.

According to the arrest report, the man was stopped after a deputy observed him driving without tail lights northbound on William Street.

During the traffic stop, the deputy observed slow response to questions, slurred speech and a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and a light odor of alcohol on his person. The 18-year-old man told the deputy he had consumed marijuana and took a few shots of alcohol earlier.

He agreed to field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment. He admitted to being “pretty drunk” and that he was a “lightweight” when it came to alcohol, the arrest report states. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. During the inventory of the man’s vehicle deputies located a container with 3.4 grams marijuana, a slimy substance that appeared to be concentrated marijuana and a bong. He provided an evidentiary blood test at jail. Bail: $3,325.
