Carson City named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists
UPDATE: The League of American Bicyclists on Tuesday recognized Carson City with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community award, joining more than 325 visionary communities from across the country. With the announcement, Carson City joins a leading group of communities, in all 50 states, that are transforming our neighborhoods.
“Visionary community leaders are recognizing the real-time and long term impact that a culture of bicycling can create,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “We applaud this new round of communities for investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their residents and beyond.”
“This is a remarkable achievement for Carson City which will help promote tourism and economic development,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell in a news release.
The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. With this impressive round, there are now 326 BFCs in all 50 states. The bronze level BFC award recognizes Carson City’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
“We are pleased that the efforts of the City and its partners have been recognized and we look forward to continuing our progress for the benefit of the community,” said Patrick Pittenger, Carson City’s Transportation Manager.
Muscle Powered, a Carson City nonprofit organization established in 1997, has been dedicated to making Nevada’s capital city a better community for bicycling and walking through advocacy, education, and promotion of bike-and-pedestrian-friendly roadways, and bike-and-pedestrian-friendly development and redevelopment.
It released the following statement Tuesday: "We at Muscle Powered are thrilled that Carson City has been designated a bronze-level Bicycle-Friendly Community. When Muscle Powered was established back in 1997 to advocate for making Carson City more welcoming for walking and bicycling, the city had a very long way to go. In the eighteen years since then much progress has been made due to the efforts of visionary City leaders and staff, working together with bicycle and pedestrian advocates. But we should not stop here. Next step - Platinum? We can do it."
Donna Inversin, president of Muscle Powered, said the current Board of Supervisors as well as Pittenger and his staff have been instrumental in making this happen.
“It has been years and years of really hard work from Muscle Powered and the City and we couldn’t do it without Patrick’s help,” she said. “Bronze is just a start. Once we get the downtown redesign done and the freeway multi-use path finished, those things will help us move to next level.”
The BFC program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community and the application itself has become a rigorous and an educational tool in itself, the news release states. Since its inception, more than 800 distinct communities have applied and the five levels of the award – diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze – provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.
