Giomi, Luis and Furlong are Carson City's 2018 Election Day winners
The winners of the 2018 contested Carson City elections are Stacey Giomi for Carson City Board of Supervisors Ward 1, Kristin Luis for Carson City Justice of the Peace Department 2, and Kenny Furlong for Carson City Sheriff.
Stacey Giomi is taking the place of Supervisor Karen Abowd, who decided not to run for a third term.
Giomi joined the Carson City Fire Department in 1983 as a dispatcher and then firefighter. He then became Fire Chief in 2005, and retired from the department in 2015.
Since leaving the fire department Giomi has worked as the Director of Facilities and Emergency Preparedness at Nevada Health Center, Inc. He currently serves at the Director of Operations for Rural Programs. The statewide nonprofit provides health services to uninsured, under-insured and the homeless in Nevada.
"I’m extremely humbled, it’s such an honor for the people to have chosen me," said Giomi. "I’m really looking forward to sitting on the Board and keeping great things happening in Carson City."
Giomi won 66.54 percent of the vote, with 14,373 votes.
The race between Kristin Luis and Ryan Russell for Justice of the Peace Department 2 was so close, it was anyone's guess as to who would win up until the last ballot was counted.
"I feel overwhelmed and amazed," said Luis. "I truly appreciate Carson City's community for supporting me in this race. I ws honored to meet so many great people in this community, and I have to thank my opponent Ryan Russell for the race that he ran. It was honorable and commendable and he has a lot of integrity and respect in my eyes, and I think this race shaped both of us for the better."
Luis ended up squeezing past with 11,079 votes, which was 50.92 percent of the count. Luis is currently the Assistant District Attorney for Carson City, leading the criminal division.
Regarding her run for Justice of the Peace, she said, “My goal is to maintain the Justice Court’s connection with the community, helping the public understand laws and procedures, recognizing the impact of crimes on victims and utilizing specialty courts to address a defendant’s addiction or mental health issues."
Kenny Furlong won a landslide 78.86 percent of the vote with 17,536 ballots cast in his favor.
Sheriff Furlong has been serving four terms for Carson City, and this will be his fifth.
"Having served four terms and now going onto a fifth is an amazing credit to the people who work here in this agency and they truly are the reason why we’ve done so well," said Furlong. "I am thrilled to serve again; this is so humbling, it’s unbelievable. I cannot say enough about the people here. As elected officials, we go out and shake hands but it really is the folks that are out there on the front lines doing their work so well every single day that allows us to complete our goals."
