California wildfires prompt Dense Smoke Advisory for Carson City area, Lake Tahoe region
Continued shift in winds will bring more smoke from California wildfires back into western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin Thursday and Friday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Dense Smoke Advisory.
Smoke from the North Complex and the Fork Fire west of Lake Tahoe is expected to push into the region Thursday afternoon and evening and settle in area valleys Friday morning. The poor conditions are expected to last through Friday.
As of 11 a.m. Thursday airnow.gov reports air quality in the "unhealthy" range in Gardnerville and Carson Valley areas, and "moderate" range in Carson City and Reno-Sparks. Those are subject to change with changes in wind direction and the amount of smoke coming from the fires.
The advisory is from 3 p.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley areas, Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake, Northern Washoe County, Surprise Valley Lassen, Eastern Plumas and Eastern Sierra counties.
The weather service advises people to stay indoors as much as possible when smoke is present. Avoid strenuous activity, especially if you are sensitive to poor air quality, such as the elderly, children and anyone with chronic illness or respiratory problems. Consider postponing outdoor activities.
Check airnow.gov for the latest air quality information.
Meanwhile, daytime high temperatures will range from the mid to upper 80s and near 90 through the weekend for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas, according to the weather service.
