Nevada Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with observance walks held statewide
Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with the 10th annual "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" observances held in Carson City, Dayton, Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon and nine communities statewide.
Nevada ranks 5th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Nevada and the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with one suicide occurring on average every 12.3 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Nevadans 15 to 34-year-olds, according to state health officials.
Approximately 1,069,325 American attempt suicide each year. That equals an attempt every 30 seconds. It is estimated that five million living Americans have attempted to kill themselves.
Every year in the United States, more than 21,000 men and women kill themselves with a gun; two-thirds more than the number who use a gun to kill another person.
The 10th Annual “Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope” will happen in 14 different communities across the state. The events are as follows:

The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the devastating effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide. The event is sponsored by the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention with support from the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention and the various community coalitions. Together we can reduce the number of families and communities impacted by a needless and tragic death.
Most of the community walk events are opening registration at 8:00 am. You can register online or download a printable registration form. For more information on each individual site, please visit the website at www.nvsuicideprevention.org.
