Heat advisory extended, thunderstorm threat poses fire concerns for Northern Nevada
A Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service for the Carson City area and many valleys of western and west-central Nevada was extended through Wednesday night as the entire region experiences typical yet extremely hot August temperatures, dry conditions, afternoon thunderstorms and the ongoing threat of wildfires.
Temperatures of 98-106 degrees are expected in the afternoons, prompting the extension of the heat advisory. Above average overnight lows of 65-70 degrees are expected for most valleys in west-central Nevada, but limited to highly urbanized areas of far western Nevada.
The local heat hazard zone includes: Northern Washoe County, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties, Greater Reno, Carson City, and Carson Valley in Douglas County, Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.

The weather service advises people to reschedule activities, recognize heat illness, drink plenty of fluids, take frequent breaks in air conditioned environments, and use sun protection. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
NV Energy is urging its electric customers in both northern and southern Nevada to conserve electricity Tuesday and Wednesday between 2 and 9 p.m. in order to offset energy supply issues caused by record-breaking heat throughout the Western United States. Conservation is the best way to reduce strain on the local power grid, the utility said in a news release.
Meanwhile, isolated to scattered thunderstorms continue across the region through Tuesday with diminishing chances Wednesday for areas north of US 50, according to the weather service. Fast moving thunderstorms will again bring gusty winds and bursts of heavy rainfall with a slight chance of dry lightning outside the main storm cores.
For Wednesday, the weather service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the region. This watch is alerting people of the potential for gusty winds and low humidity for northern and western Nevada and portions of northeast California.
Forecasters say winds will be out of the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph with humidity levels between 10 to 15 percent. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
