Free legal services to veterans at Carson City clinic
Nevada veterans of the United States military can take advantage of free legal services offered by the Nevada Attorney General's Office of Military Legal Assistance (OMLA), said Special Assistant Attorney General Nic K. Danna.
"Many veterans in Nevada don't know that these services exist for them," Danna said. "We want them to know that we're here for them."
OMLA will host a pro bono legal services clinic for Nevada military veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Carson City Sheriff's Office (CCSO), located at 911 E. Musser Street in Carson City.
This clinic will focus more specifically on the needs of service veterans from Nevada's rural counties, Danna said.
OMLA, launched in November 2015 by Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, can help Nevada military veterans and active duty personnel complete wills and powers of attorney (POAs), as well as provide assistance with military rights, consumer fraud, predatory lending issues, naturalization/immigation, and rights pertaining to property/landlord and creditor/debtor issues.
"It is a common misconception that service members have unfettered access to legal services as a result of their military service," the OMLA web site states. "The reality is that JAG Officers cannot represent service members in the overwhelming majority of civil matters. This lack of provided legal representation leaves service members with the only option of hiring private attorneys at unaffordable rates."
Besides Nevada veterans, active duty and reserve military personnel, as well as national guard members residing in the Silver State also qualify for OMLA's pro bono legal services.
"The Office of Military Legal Assistance is dedicated to addressing the legal gaps in representation for our current military service members," Laxalt said in a November 2015 press release. "I am encouraged by the overwhelming response from more than 100 local attorneys who have pledged their commitment to our mission, and hold high expectations for this program. It is my hope that the Office of Military Legal Assistance will continue to expand its services and become a lasting legacy for the military families of Nevada.”
Outside of a pro bono clinic, though, normal services are by referral only, the OMLA web site states, and active duty personnel should contact their local Judge Advocate General's Office to be referred.
