Unauthorized Fireworks are always illegal in Carson City and surrounding region, authorities remind residents
As we head into the July 4 holiday, local law enforcement and fire agencies are warning residents not to ignite fireworks of any kind.
Not only are fireworks potentially dangerous and could start wildfires, private use of fireworks is illegal in Carson City. The Carson City Sheriff's Department will enforce the law to the fullest extent, as lighting fireworks is a misdemeanor offense.
They are also illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin and much of the surrounding area. The same holds true for neighboring Douglas and Lyon counties. Possession and or discharge of fireworks in both counties are unlawful and will not be tolerated.
Fireworks also can cause serious physical damage. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks can cause eye injuries and burns to the skin. Fireworks and sparklers can burn at a temperature of 2,000 degrees and should never be placed on any part of the body.
Lighting fireworks in any capacity affects dogs and other pets, as well. According to the Nevada Humane Society, fireworks can be quite overwhelming, and possibly hazardous and even life-threatening to pets. For this reason, many pets may try to escape as fast as possible to protect themselves from the sounds and sights of fireworks going off.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the RSVP Carson City 4th of July fireworks show and carnival has been canceled and instead could be moved to the Labor Day weekend. Regardless, residents in the Northern and Western Nevada areas are still urged to not light any fireworks, or face the consequences.
