Local Special Olympics athletes to represent Team Nevada at 2018 USA Games in Seattle
RENO — Ten Northern Nevada Special Olympics athletes have earned the honor of representing Special Olympics Nevada at the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle.
The athletes, along with their coaches, will join a select group of other athletes and coaches from Southern Nevada to compete as Team Nevada at the USA Games from July 1-6. The USA Games occurs once every four years and features more than 4,000 Special Olympics athletes and coaches from all 50 states competing in a variety of different sports. Greater Nevada Credit Union is a proud sponsor of Team Nevada.
Team Nevada will consist of 29 athletes and eight coaches who will go for gold in either basketball, bowling, swimming or track and field. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most of the athletes to represent their city, program area, state and family on a national level. Along with elite competition, the USA Games will include a star-studded Opening Ceremony (Charlie Puth, Marshmello and others), celebrations and much more.

The athletes have been training for months for the USA Games and will depart on June 30. Special Olympics offers free year-round sports competition, educational programs and health resources to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Meet the full team at www.SONV.org.
Special Olympics Nevada is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through sports, education and athlete health. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization offers free year-round training and competition programs for 3,050 athletes who compete in more than 50 competitions in 10 sports annually.
Within the Community Sports Program and the Schools Partnership Program, SONV is encouraging the growth of Unified Sports, bringing together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to play as teammates. In addition, SONV impacts more than 35,000 students each year by promoting inclusion on school campuses.
SONV is also committed to improving the overall health and well-being of individuals with intellectual disabilities through Healthy Athletes events, offering screenings and services free of charge. SONV relies on the support of 3,445 volunteers and funding from individuals, organizations, corporations, government and foundations. In 2018, SONV is celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Special Olympics.
