Carson City sheriff's investigators warn of thieves striking unlocked vehicles
The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating several vehicle burglaries and credit card thefts that happened this month in the Timberline area and is reminding all residents to keep their vehicle doors locked overnight.
On the night of June 9, seven vehicle were broken into, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Detective Sam Hatley. The vehicles were unlocked, making access easy for the thieves.
Hatley advises people to not leave valuables, credit cards, money and firearms in their vehicles, whether they are unlocked or not. This spring has brought out a number of thieves, especially in remote places around town or along hiking and biking trailheads, he said.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has a few tips to help prevent vehicle burglaries.
— Lock your car doors. Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle. Take everything of value with you. Don’t leave valuables such as wallets, purses, credit cards, cellphone, laptop computers and firearms in your vehicle.
— Surveillance cameras help solve most of the burglary and theft cases. If you have surveillance cameras already, make sure you know to operate them, and they are functioning and recording properly.
— If you see suspicious activity, notify the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center. With the public’s assistance in reporting suspicious activity, the ability to solve and prevent crime increases greatly.
