Carson City Sheriff's Office urges caution as bicycle events, Epic Rides begin this week
With Epic Rides coming this week, traffic in the area will be increasing. Cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles will all contribute to congestion on the roadways. Add construction and road closures around the Epic Rides event and you can count on travel delays.
Due to the expected increase in pedestrian and cyclist traffic, the Carson City Sheriff's Office will be conducting another Joining Forces Pedestrian Crosswalk Operation this week. Motorists are advised to pay extra attention to the crosswalks in Carson City and to drive with courtesy and care.
For local street closures, downtown construction and area road projects, go here for this week's road report.
Since many bicyclists are expected, remember that the law requires that you pass giving a 3 foot distance between your vehicle and the cyclists. You may also find yourself sharing the road with bicycle riders who are not in the race but, enjoying the warm day. Bicyclists are reminded that you must follow the same traffic laws as motorized vehicles when on the roadways. When using a crosswalk, walk your bike across the street before riding on.
Pedestrians need to remember to give adequate distance for a vehicle to be able to stop for you before crossing the roadway. Use the marked crosswalks or traffic signal crosswalks. Make sure that the driver acknowledges you before crossing.
Be aware that a large vehicle such as a motor home, semi truck or vehicles pulling trailers cannot stop in the same amount of time as a passenger vehicle due to their added weight. Try to avoid crossing when one is approaching.
Drivers be aware of your surroundings and be sure to pay attention to the construction, detour and road closed signage as well as the pedestrian crosswalk signs. Watch for construction workers and follow their directions when in construction zones. Give them some room to do their work and if possible, plan an alternate route prior to travelling.
Don't forget to wear your seatbelts, put away the cell phones and keep your focus on the roadway ahead. By working together, we can ensure that everyone will have a safe, fun and memorable week.
