Carson City area weather: Slick roads for morning commute
Light snow fell across parts of western Nevada and the northern Sierra overnight. The heaviest snow of several inches fell along the Sierra Front around Carson City and Minden, south of Reno and the Tahoe basin from Highway 50 south to Markleeville. Other areas saw a light snowfall and water on the roadways has frozen.
If you must travel this morning, allow extra time to reach your destination as untreated roads will be slick and hazardous. Carson City Public Works has been out overnight plowing and sanding the roadways around the capital city.
The arrival of the sun, will help with the snow melt along the roadways. Chains were required Thursday morning over Sierra passes and on US-50 from mile post 14.0 in Carson City to mile post 1.9 in Lyon County. See NVRoads.com or call 511 for the latest road and travel information.
Looking ahead, forecasters say the weather system that brought us the snow will gradually weaken through Saturday. This will allow for a few showers to persist but with decreasing coverage each day.
Cloud cover will remain thick south of I-80 Thursday before thinning some Friday and Saturday. High temperatures Thursday will begin to warm as we head into the weekend with readings reaching the 40s in the Sierra and 50s in the lower valleys by Saturday.
While conditions are not ideal for widespread fog formation, some of the colder valleys could see an increased potential tonight if skies clear, according to NWS forecasters.
