Carson City leaders OK deep budget cuts, including sheriff deputy positions
The Carson City Board of Supervisors agreed to make about $7.8 million in cuts, including the elimination of about 20 positions from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
To balance the nearly $10 million deficit, supervisors agreed to use $2 million of the Landfill Post Closure fund and OK'd plans to cut expenses by $7.8 million. (See attached PDF for a list of the cuts.)
Supervisors also voted to revisit a 2 percent across-the-board salary reduction for all city employees. The savings would be around $700,000. The employee salary reduction had been off the table, however supervisors insisted that it be brought back into the budget discussion.
Among the $7.8 in budget cuts (see PDF attachment) was to cut the equivalent of 20 positions from the Sheriff's Office.
In a show of support deputies wore yellow T-shirts declaring "Say No to Cuts for Cops," and packed the Board of Supervisors meeting.
Sheriff Kenny Furlong told supervisors that the loss of up to 20 positions is "a reality" and he has done everything in his power to save as many jobs as he can.
However, the Carson City Sheriffs Protective Association, which represents 77 employees, said they have foregone a 3 precent raise and are willing to negotiate even more salary reductions to save jobs.
Don Gibson, president of the CCSPA, told supervisors that they had tentatively agreed to a pay freeze and that "the last thing we want to see is any member of the law enforcement community lose their job. We are willing to go to any length so that deputy sheriffs don't lose their jobs."
Supervisor Pete Livermore said he would like the bargaining units to meet with the city on further cuts the union said it is willing to make.
Following the vote, Gibson said he was disappointed with the outcome but vowed to press on and negotiate. He also suggested more salary cuts need to be made at the upper management levels.
"CCSPA strongly encourages that cuts be made at the administration levels which will ensure more cops on the street and at the dentention facility," he said.
