Carson City animal shelter needs volunteer foster help, slashes adoption fees
The Nevada Humane Society's shelters in Carson City and Reno are currently open and fully operational. Our primary goal right now is to reduce the number of animals housed at our shelters in an effort to avoid overcrowding should we need to restrict our services or close altogether.
We need your support to ensure the health and safety of our animals during this period of preparation and response to COVID-19.
The Nevada Humane Society's Carson City and Reno shelters are currently open and fully operational; however in an effort to be proactive and prepared we are asking for your help to ensure we are able to continue providing care and resources to our shelter animals.
There are three important things you can do right now to help us:
— Adopt. Adoption fees on all shelter pets are 50 percent off
— Sign up to be an Emergency Foster
— Donate
ADOPT: Our primary goal right now is to reduce the number of animals housed at our shelters in an effort to avoid overcrowding should we need to restrict our services due to staffing constraints. The most helpful thing you can do to support Nevada Humane Society and the pets we care for right now is to adopt. We would love your help in providing forever homes to as many of our pets as possible to help us reduce our current animal population.
Emergency Fosters Needed: We are also in need of emergency fosters, who can take home a pet if we reach critical capacity. To sign up to be an on-call, emergency foster please email fcoordinator@nevadahumanesociety.org with the subject line EMERGENCY FOSTER and the following information:
First name:
Last name:
Phone number:
Types of pets living in your home:
Ages of children living in your home:
Type of home: (apt., house, mobile home, etc.)
Do you have a yard?
Donate: People who can’t adopt or foster can make a donation to Nevada Humane Society here.

What we’re doing to keep the community safe
We want you to know that we are working hard to keep our shelters thoroughly sanitized to ensure it is safe for you to come in to visit with, and adopt our shelter pets. We greatly appreciate everyone who is offering to help by adopting a shelter pet in need of a forever home right now!
Steps we are taking to ensure our shelters are safe for the community:
— Hand sanitizing stations have been installed at all shelter entrances
— Social distancing practices are being strictly followed
— All door handles and communal surfaces (including chairs, counters, tables, public writing utensils, etc.) are sanitized hourly using Rescue which is confirmed to kill the virus

Can COVID-19 affect pets?
The American Veterinary Medical Association released a statement saying there is no evidence that dogs or cats can be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.
