Group files petition to put Nugget Project to a vote of the people
A group of local activists have filed a petition the the county clerk to stop Carson City from using public money on the City Center Project (aka Nugget Project) without getting approval from the voters.
Attorney Day Williams, a long-time opponent of the project, said the group started talking about it last week before filing the paperwork on Friday.
“We filed the petition because the city continues to move forward with this boondoggle,” Williams said.
The petition asks for the adoption of a city ordinance that reads:
“No public funding shall be used for the proposed Carson City Center Project (commonly known as the Nugget Economic Development Project or the Nugget Project) without a majority vote of the people approving such funding.”
A copy of the petition is included below.
The group must get at least 2,935 signature from voters registered in Carson City by June 28. In reality, they need more than that to account for some that may not be verified.
If the petition gets the required number of signatures, then it goes to the Board of Supervisors for a vote. If they don't adopt the ordinance, then the issue would be placed on the November ballot.
Williams said that with the Republican caucus this weekend and other events like the Carson City Rendezvous, they are optimistic about getting the signatures they need.
Update: Mayor Bob Crowell forwarded these comments about the petition effort:
"In these economic times I don't think our community should ignore the opportunity to have $21 million in private capital invested in our city in a project structured to create no debt for our citizens."
