Carson City Republican Women will hear candidates running for local offices in the June primary at their upcoming meeting Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at 12 noon.

The Carson City Republican committee held a Candidate Forum last week and recorded the virtual sessions with each of the candidates. The primary ballots are out and please watch / listen to each candidate that will allow you to make an informed choice.

Carson City Attorney Day Williams has announced that he will run for Assembly District 40, which includes Carson City and a portion of southeast Washoe County. He supports constitutional rights, measures to improve the economy and create jobs, and education that meets today’s needs.

National Honor Society President Eleanor Sturm made her opening remarks at the annual NHS induction ceremony Sept. 17 in the CHS Big Gym. Guest Speaker, Greater Nevada Credit Union Vice President Jenny Casselman then addressed the new NHS members and discussed what it means to be a part of such a fantastic organization and the responsibilities of being an NHS member.

Gail Williams, 61, of Carson City has been identified by family as the woman who died in the Nov. 17 crash at the intersection of Stewart and Robinson streets.

Her brother, Day Williams, released the name. There will be a memorial service for Gail on Monday, Dec. 26, 3 p.m. at The Bridge Church, 901 N Stewart St, Carson City.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will be discussing on Thursday an amendment to the previous redevelopment incentive loan package offered to Micheal Hohl Motors to keep the company's three dealerships in the county.

The company has already received $2.4 million in redevelopment funds that was used to help build the new Honda and Subaru dealerships on South Carson Street, and is preparing to take out the remaining $2.4 million for remodeling of the GM dealership.

The people behind the petition effort to force the Carson City Center aka Nugget Project on the ballot submitted 4,559 signatures to the Carson City Clerk-Recorder's office for verification this morning.

The group needs have have 2,935 signatures verified by the clerk to qualify the petition. Day Williams, an attorney who is part of the petitioners' group, said they did their own verification check of the signatures against the voter rolls and are confident they have more than enough to qualify.

A group of local activists have filed a petition the the county clerk to stop Carson City from using public money on the City Center Project (aka Nugget Project) without getting approval from the voters.

Attorney Day Williams, a long-time opponent of the project, said the group started talking about it last week before filing the paperwork on Friday.

“We filed the petition because the city continues to move forward with this boondoggle,” Williams said.

The petition asks for the adoption of a city ordinance that reads:

Lue Vang, a Carson City teen who has been missing since April 29, has been found safe in Toledo, Ohio.

Attorney Day Williams, who represents Lue's mother Yer Her, said she is in Toledo where her son is in a crisis center, and the two will be flying home today.

According to Williams, Yer Her said that Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Jessica Rivera "ultimately pulled thing through for us. She coordinated the whole thing."

The family appreciates the outpouring of community support for them.

I turned off the TV late last night, unable to withstand another minute of talking head after talking head trying to come up with a narrative for this election.

For some reason, it seems they think that their audience is comprised of 6-year-olds who can't comprehend anything that isn't force-fed to them in tiny, single-concept bites.

Was it the NObama election? Was the the fiery phoenix of the Tea Party? Was it creeping socialism, or simple arrogance? What about government spending? Or was it just time to throw the bums out?

Judy Whites letter about John McKenna's job at Access TV is right on the money. John MckEnna was the teasurer on the Board of Trustees for the Carson Access Television Foundation when over $500,00 dollars was embezzeled by Craig Swope. I remember this story now because I was so outraged that Craig Swope got a slap on the wrist while any Joe Smo would have got years in prison. The president of that Board was Tom Baker. Mr. Baker had been in office longer than the by laws permitted.

Tonight's forum feature candidates for Carson City Board of Supervisors and the Carson City School Board. Candidates include Karen Abowd, Rob Joiner, John McKenna and Day Williams for Board of Supervisors, and Ron Swirczek, Julie Bushner, Barbara Meyers and Randy Carlson for school board.

The Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition is sponsoring a forum for local candidates running for office on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. The forum is free and open to the public.

Day Williams, Carson City lawyer and candidate for Supervisor in Ward 3 will sign copies of his new book, We the People at Borders Bookstore. We the People is a book with hundrends of presidential quotations and many American milestone documents. Inspiring and thought-provokiing quotations are from George Washington to Barack Obama. and span 367 years of American history. The book is a fundamental compendium of American law and lore.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to operate the Arlington Square Ice Rink for another season at the board's Oct. 7 meeting.

According to the staff summary, "This request is to expend $192,730 from the General Fund to support the operations of the Arlington Square Ice Rink for the 2010-2011 season. Staff is estimating that the ice skating rink will bring in $86,475; therefore the net subsidy will be $106,255."

The yet-to-be-completed plans for the Carson City Center aka Nugget Project may not be voted on by the Carson City Board of Supervisors until after the beginning of the new year, according to City Manager Larry Werner.

Werner said there will be a status update presented to the citizens committee on Sept. 27. Another committee meeting will be scheduled once the plans are finalized, Werner said. The presentation of the full plans had already been delayed twice before, adding two months to the original timeline.

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

If you have taken part in the events going on in downtown Carson City this summer — such as the Friday night concerts on 3rd Street or the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings — then you have witnessed the Curry Street Promenade in action.

Though most would agree that the events are a great benefit for our downtown, the process by which this project came about is a strange one, tainted with managerial missteps, missing budgets and political indifference.

Ok, so we know who won. But did yesterday's vote tell us anything?

I wrote earlier about how the outcome of the supervisors races could give us a clue on how the public views the Nugget Project, AKA the Carson City Center Project.

Karen Abowd, the only candidate to openly support the project, did come in first in her primary with 31 percent of the vote in a six-way race.

Despite the efforts of some citizens to get the Nugget Project to be put to a vote of the people, you won't find it on the ballot when you go and vote today.

But the results of this primary election might tell us a little about the public's sentiment concerning this project.

Out of the nine candidates running for the two open seats on the Carson City Board of Supervisors, only one — Karen Abowd — has expressed full support for the Nugget Project. The rest are either skeptical or outright opposed.

An initiative petition has been filed with the city clerk to put the Carson City Center Project, AKA Nugget Project, on the ballot in 2012.

The petition asks, "The proposed 1/8 cent sales tax increase for the proposed Carson City Center Project (formerly known as the Nugget Project) shall be placed on the 2012 general election ballot for a vote of the people." Copies of the paperwork are attached below.

A candidates forum, hosted by the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition, will be held tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center. Carson Now will have live coverage.
The forum is free and open to the public.

CARSON CITY — A 14-year-old Carson City girl who was taking a break from "The Sound of Music" rehearsals Thursday night at the Carson City Community Center, said she pushed away a man who "came out of nowhere" and jumped on top of her as stunned friends watched.

"I was kind of freaked out," the 14-year-old victim told Carson Now late Thursday night. "I just held my breath and pushed him off of me."

The unidentified man, who had led authorities on a car chase through town, was detained shortly after the attack by Carson City deputies. The incident began at about 8:30 p.m.
