Local Non-Profit Making a Difference, One Meal at a Time
Food For Thought, Inc. in Carson City published its annual Holiday Letter and announced its 2014/2015 distribution numbers. During the 2014/2015 school year, Food For Thought’s Backpack Program distributed 13,509 bags of food that contained 54,036 meals to food insecure elementary, middle and high school children in Carson City. In the summer of 2015, the program provided free lunches to children at two locations within Carson City. The innovative 2015 Summer Program served over 4,500 meals.
Food For Thought, Inc. is a local non-profit organization combating food insecurity with one simple focus: Prevent area children from going hungry on weekends and during the summer. Local elementary, middle, and high school children can participate in the Backpack Program and receive a bag of food on Fridays at their school for consumption over the weekend. Hundreds of meals are distributed each week during the school year.
The Summer Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school. Additionally, in 2015, Food For Thought established the Infant and Toddler Program with the objective of encouraging student mothers to stay in school by ensuring their babies’ nutritional needs are met by supplementing formula requirements.
Food For Thought’s programs are unique and revolutionary in their approach to reaching those in need of accessing food and to help fill nutritional gaps for the most vulnerable in society--children.
Impacts of food insecurity have lasting effects on our society as a whole. Especially hard hit are children under the age of two. During this critical developmental stage, lack of proper nutrition can lead to learning disabilities. School age children may experience a variety of behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, aggression, anxiety, mood swings, and bullying.
“Thanks to the outstanding efforts of our volunteers and sponsors, Food For Thought has made great strides in combating food insecurity in our area. Sadly, there is still much to be done. Please consider volunteering or supporting our efforts in the coming year. We are grateful for any assistance you can provide,” said Marlene Maffei, Executive Director of Food For Thought.
Food For Thought’s continued operation is made possible through private and business donations. Amazingly, this pioneering programming is not only effective in reaching needy children, it is surprisingly affordable at a mere five dollars per child per weekend.

About Food For Thought
Founded in 2006, Fritsch Friends was created as a pilot program to discreetly and directly provide weekly bags of food for school children in need. Thanks to the support from the community and incredible volunteers, the organization has grown into an independent, non-profit organization known as Food for Thought, Inc.™. Over the last decade, Food For Thought has distributed tens of thousands of meals to the most vulnerable in our society, and has developed and evolved its programming to meet the changing needs of these children. Today, Food For Thought works to combat food insecurity by serving 13 schools in the Carson City community.
