Dementia Conversations: Carson City followup to community panel discussion
The Alzheimer’s Association hosted Dementia Conversations at the Carson City Library on Dec. 11, 2019. This event was held to address areas of concern expressed by dementia caregivers and professionals who attended the Carson City Alzheimer’s Community Forum earlier this year.
Topics of discussion included tips for successful conversations about driving, visiting the doctor and legal and financial planning with family or friends living with dementia. The education presentation was followed by a Q & A period with a discussion panel, which included representation from the Carson City Sheriff’s office Medical Outreach Safety Team (MOST), Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans (VARN) and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Guest speakers from MOST included Bekah Bock and Deputy Gibson who presented and encouraged folks to call dispatch and enter their loved one living with dementia in their database. This will provide law enforcement with information on how best to respond to your loved one if ever an emergency does arise. Call dispatch at 775.887.2677.
George McNally who joined us from VARN discussed the necessity of Durable Powers of Attorney for both financial and medical needs. Members of the community who are over the age of sixty are welcome to meet with an attorney for a free twenty-minute consultation the first Monday of each month at 5pm at their Carson City Office (904 N. Nevada Street, Carson City, NV 89702).
Eligibility requirements can be found on their website: http://www.varn.org/newsite/. Please call 775-883-8278 to schedule an appointment.
Jennifer Pitts, from the DMV, discussed the Confidential Physician's Report and the application for renewal of one's license or request for ID, as a diagnosis of dementia may prevent an applicant from operating a motor vehicle safely and could be hazardous to public safety.
The Alzheimer’s Association will continue to provide no cost services and resources to the Carson City community and surrounding area, as well as collaborate with community partners to ensure a holistic approach to dementia care. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia throughout the promotion if brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s. Please visit www.alz.org or call 1-800-272-3900 for more information.
