Facts about Sales Tax
Let's put this silly claim by my opponent that he's the voice of reason to rest and use his supposed opposition to the 1/8th city sales tax hike to do it.
With the city Supervisor seat from Ward 4 in the balance, Jim Shirk once again wants to have things both ways in typical politician fashion by saying he voted against the sales tax hike and opposed the downtown Carson Street project, yet he leaves out important details about his voting record and value received.
As his opponent, I'm duty bound to point out the following:
If a Carson City family of four has household income of $40,000 a year and spends about 25% of it on items that carry a sales tax impact, the 1/8th of a penny increase would cost them just $12.50 a year. You should note that grocery store food items aren't subject to sales tax.
The plan for spending money raised covers much more than the Downtown Carson Street project. Let me use a quote from a May 1, 2014 article on the matter I wrote for The Nevada Appeal long before I retired and decided to seek office:
"The project include a multi-purpose athletic center, an animal shelter, downtown streetscape changes to make the business core more pedestrian-friendly, Carson Street and East William Street improvements outside downtown, and a Community Center upgrade to help improve cultural use of the Bob Boldrick Theater."
The bottom line of any expenditure is value received. My belief is residents are getting much for their investment.
If you never want a tax hike for needs and sound purposes, your choice may be my opponent and his penny wise, pound foolish approach. But if you believe in investing in your community and getting the most bang for your buck when needs arise, your choice seems clear to me and I would appreciate your support.
