Wilderness and camp training program Saturday at Nevada State Museum
In partnership with Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the U.S. Forest Service, “Family Fun Saturdays” returns to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with a program to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act Saturday, Sept. 13.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests will explore how to set up a tent, leave no trace, name that animal, be safe and find directions using a compass. Visitors will learn skills to help plan their own camping trips to Nevada’s wild lands this fall.
The outdoor program will be in the museum’s park, where students will learn camping skills, weather permitting. Using a pocket naturalist’s guide, groups will work to identify animals in the natural history gallery.
Rubbings will be available for young children along with handouts and resource lists on outdoor education will also be available. The event is free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Adult tickets are $8 at the admissions desk and go on sale at 9 a.m. at 600 N. Carson St. For more information, call 687-4810 ext. 237 or email dstevenson@nevadaculture.org.
The Wilderness Act of 1964 was written by Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society. It created the legal definition of wilderness in the United States, and protected 9.1 million acres of federal land. The result of a long effort to protect federal wilderness and to create a formal mechanism for designating wilderness, the Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on Sept. 3, 1964 after more than 60 drafts and eight years of work.
The current amount of areas designated by the NWPS as wilderness totals 757 areas encompassing 109.5 million acres of federally owned land in 44 states and Puerto Rico (5 percent of the land in the United States.)
