To kick off our Dia de los Muertos celebration this year I will lead a craft making Facebook Live event at 10 a.m. Saturday as part of the Nevada State Museum Family Fun Saturday. We will be making tissue paper flowers that are used to decorate Dia de los Muertos Altars.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

“Family Fun Saturdays” returns to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with “Fun with Rock Art and Coyote Stories” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. Guests will be challenged to look at images of Nevada rock art and ask how it fits into understanding American Indian culture and archaeology, what it is, where it came from and how it can be protected.

Family Fun Saturday at the Nevada State Museum on Dec. 13 features a special holiday program, Pines are Fine. All ages welcome to the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Make a pine needle angel to decorate your holiday tree and craft a holiday wreath out of cones; choose easy crafts for younger audiences. Learn how to tell a pine from a fir or spruce by looking at their cones and needles. Discover one of our state trees, the Pinyon Pine, a plant collected during John C. Frémont’s 2nd expedition.

Wilderness and camp training program Saturday at Nevada State Museum

In partnership with Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the U.S. Forest Service, “Family Fun Saturdays” returns to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with a program to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act Saturday, Sept. 13.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests will explore how to set up a tent, leave no trace, name that animal, be safe and find directions using a compass. Visitors will learn skills to help plan their own camping trips to Nevada’s wild lands this fall.

Saturday, May 17 features Exploring Topographical Maps and the Fremont exhibit, from 10 am - 3 pm for ages ten and up. Discover how to read a topo map to plan hikes, understand the flow of water, and appreciate the rugged Nevada landscape; construct a hill using contour layers and learn how to read a compass.

Twined Basketry Class, ages 10 and up

Enjoy Family Fun Saturday at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Make a twined basket to take home using techniques similar to those used for thousands of years in the Great Basin.

Hurry! Class size limited to 10 children, ages 10 and up, with a parent or adult guardian. This 3-hour class will include breaks and a short introduction to Nevada's wetlands. Free for museum members! Non-members must pay $10 per basket kit plus the regular adult admission fee of $8. Advanced registration required by Jan. 10.
