'Guitarslinger' Shane Dwight Performs at Carson Station Saturday, April 19
Northern Nevada residents will get a rare chance to see Shane Dwight perform at Carson Station Casino, Carson City, Saturday, April 19 at 8 p.m. The concert is free.
In the music industry, there is often a preference to try and quickly define an artist and his music by placing him in one or two genre categories. The problem is a preconceived model doesn't fit someone like Dwight.
He's not just a singer or a songwriter or performer or an awesome guitar player (The Nashville City Paper calls him a "guitarslinger"), he's all those things and more. Even his music is tough to define. He likes many different styles and is well versed in jazz, blues, classic rock 'n roll, R&B, roots music and country pop. He can't settle on just one, when asked to choose.
Dwight's early talent was defined in part by where he grew up. The diverse musical undercurrents of his East Bay upbringing ensured he was exposed to many different musical styles in the San Jose area. The diversity he encountered has certainly stuck with him.
"I don't do just one type of music at my shows," Dwight said. "I try and do some country, some rock 'n roll, blues ... the kind of music that I consider to be born out here in the U.S."
Now based in Nashville, Dwight spends a good amount of time working with a small group of musicians and writers in a deeply creative songwriting process. Not all the songs are intended to be sung by him. He's spending an increasing amount of time writing for other artists as well.
"I'm really enjoying the creative aspect of writing and collaborating with others and helping other artists as they are working to build their own careers," he said. "I do it by being true to my own inspiration and that comes from many different genres."
Still, he enjoys the time he gets to travel around the country for his live performances.
"I always hope to be able to perform on stage because I love live shows. I especially love the quality of the performances I get to do now."
Dwight's latest album "This House" is expected to be released this week. Copies of the new album will also be available at the concert at Carson Station Casino.
Carson Station is located at 900 S. Carson Street, Carson City,(775) 883-0900.
