Birds on view in family program at Nevada State Museum March 8
Jenni Jeffers will present “Owls in Nevada” from 1-2 pm, Saturday, March 8 at the Nevada State Museum’s Family Fun Saturday program. A biologist for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Jeffers will bring some of the live owl species native to Nevada and explain their life history.
Tickets are available at 9 a.m. The museum will offer a science activity from 10 a.m. to noon in the Discovery Lab, that includes examples of bird’s nests, feathers and eggs, and an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet.
Guests can also make a bird’s nest with natural and manmade materials. Each of the activities is limited to 8 people per 30-minute session, suitable for ages 8 and up. Admission is $8 for adults and free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Children must be accompanied by a responsible parent. For more information, contact dstevenson@nevadaculture.org or (775) 687-4810, ext. 237. The museum is at 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.
Owls occupy a variety of habitats, however they are seldom observed by the public because much of their activity occurs at night, Jeffers said. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in wildlife biology from New Mexico State University and has more than 25 years of field experience working with birds and mammals. Jeffers came to Nevada in 2001 and has been the Western Region wildlife biologist for the department for 13 years.
She is responsible for the majority of surveys for the state’s non-game water birds and shorebirds in north-central Nevada and those that are colonial nesters. Jeffers does summer and winter surveys for bats and works extensively with the abandoned mine program. She coordinates funding for bat gates to protect important colonies of bats from human disturbance.
