Tom Petty, Rod Stewart tribute shows to headline homeless fundraiser at Carson's Fuji Park
The Michael Furlong Band will rock the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in Carson City at "A Face in the Crowd," a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute show this Saturday night, March 7. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the band will keep Tom Petty fans on the dance floor until the show wraps up at 10 p.m.
Furlong is the band's lead vocalist, lead guitarist, songwriter, audio engineer, audio and video editor and producer. For four decades they have appeared on stages at casinos, fairs, festivals and theme parks throughout North America as well as in Japan, Hawaii and islands of the Pacific.
Sharing the stage will be Rob Hanna and his "Salute to Rod Stewart," once seen at Harrah's locally and across North America going back to the 1980's. Paul Manktelow, Hanna's former lead guitarist, says he "always loved playing in this band," and describes Rob as "a true professional" who "put his heart and soul into every show."
Food for the buffet dinner is being donated by Carson City BBQ, which has won scores of awards at top-level cookoffs. Co-owners Phil Hyatt and Duane Felker have built a decades-long reputation for delivering superior food at the events they cater and through their retail partner, Butler Meats in Carson City's Frontier Plaza.
Other attractions at the event include a no-host bar, raffle prizes, silent auctions, and a wine bottle ring toss.
"A Face in the Crowd" is a fundraiser for The Do Drop In, which has served as Carson City's day center for the homeless and mentally ill since 1998. It's a charity that depends entirely on fundraisers like this one and the generosity of its regular donors.
The Do Drop In's parent organization, the Rural Center for Independent Living, receives no grant money from the city, state or federal government, but being an all-volunteer effort, even a little in the way of community support goes a long way.
Tickets are $50, which covers the cost of the night's dual-headliner show as well as a delicious buffet-style dinner. To reserve seats, or a table, call Jackie Lundberg at 775-301-6929. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at A to Zen, 1803 N Carson Street in Carson City, Vino 100, 1131 Steamboat Pkwy in Reno, or JT Basque, 1426 US-395 in Gardnerville.
