Lyon County unveils Ken Harvey Canal plaque in Silver Springs

On Dec. 14, 2022, Lyon County held a dedication ceremony renaming the Tahoe Avenue Storm Drainage Canal to the Ken Harvey Canal. The event was held at 2565 Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs where a monument and plaque was unveiled overlooking the canal.

Nevada Division of Forestry opens pre-proposal period for landscape scale restoration grants

The Nevada Division of Forestry is accepting preliminary proposals for Landscape Restoration Grants for habitat restoration projects now through March 1, 2023, at 5pm. These grants will support projects that improve and/or rehabilitate rural forests and rangelands, water resources, riparian areas, and wildlife habitat.

Nevada Division of Forestry opens pre-proposal period for wildfire prevention and mitigation grants

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Forestry is now accepting preliminary proposals for the following competitive grants addressing wildfire prevention and mitigation in Nevada:

— Hazardous Fuels-Community Protection (HF-CP) Grant – These grant funds support hazardous fuels reduction projects and restoration of fire-adapted ecosystems. Projects must be located on private property that is adjacent to US Forest Service lands. Please submit your pre-proposal by January 17, 2023, at 5pm.

Nevada State Police host 'Cram the Cruiser' toy collection event Saturday at Reno headquarters

The Nevada State Police invites the Northern Nevada community to a “Cram the Cruiser” toy drive happening this Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reno Nevada Highway Patrol Office, 357 Hammil Lane in Reno.

Nevada State Police troopers and officers will be collecting toy donations for children in need in our community. Refreshments will be provided as troopers attempt to "Cram the Cruiser" with gifts.

Out-of-this-world note cards available as part of Western Nevada College fundraiser

Western Nevada College is excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jack C. Davis Observatory in 2023. The observatory is named after the college’s first president and opened in 2003 with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, lecturing at opening ceremonies.

Carson City Rotarians, public to learn about Polio Plus Program

Vaccinations often make headlines, but rarely the Polio vaccine. You can learn why it is still important at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting.

Rotary Polio Plus District Chair Phillip Mahoney will be the guest speaker at the meeting, which takes place at noon, Tuesday, Dec. 13 in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 West King Street in Carson City. The public is welcome to attend. The presentation will cover both the past and present status of polio, vaccines and the different forms of the virus.
