Carson Librarian to speak at Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Librarian Joy Holt, who assumed the position on October 1st after serving several months as acting director. Her predecessor, Tod Colegrove, is now dean of the Albertsons Library at Boise State.
At her August 25th job interview with the library's board of trustees, Holt spoke fondly of her experiences growing up in Winnemucca, working as a library aide in the eighth grade. She also worked part time at her college library. As Assistant Director of the Humboldt County Library, she helped get a branch open in the rural town of Denio, near the Oregon border. “It meant a tremendous amount to that community,” she said.
The Carson City library has become her new home. She told the board that the staff works with a sense of momentum. “Our staff is really starting to hit its stride. I really value the work we get to do. Every day we come to work in a library is a good day. It’s really a gift.” Her interview turned into a broader discourse on the importance of public libraries. She called Carson's library “a community within a community,” going on to say that “it should always be about information access and the ability to have your quality of life improve.”
Holt holds a bachelor's degree in history from Pacific University in Oregon. While there she played in student dramas, was on the debate team, and served as the new student orientation team leader. She later earned a Juris Doctor from Charleston School of Law. There she served as treasurer of the Children's Advocacy and Family Law Society, chaired the Student Bar Association's judicial committee, judged the mock trial competition and served as mentor and bailiff at the moot court. She also volunteered at the tax assistance program.
For years before beginning her legal studies, Joy worked in accountancy at a Charleston-based casual and fine dining restaurant chain. While a student she did legal work at a Charleston law firm specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice. Her special skills include accountancy, legal research and writing, taxation, compliance, Office suite applications and the French language.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, December 12th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Holt's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
