Sheriff Furlong to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Kenneth T. Furlong, the 26th sheriff to serve Carson City and Ormsby County since 1861. Among the topics to be discussed will be school security, the Sheriff Department's deescalation policy, and what may be unintended consequences of current juvenile detention practices. He will also be prepared to field questions on any issues of concern to the community.
The sheriff was born and raised in Carson City, graduating from Carson High in 1975. In 1978, while employed as a Carson City Fire Department dispatcher, he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force. During his Air Force career he earned associate’s degrees in Police Science and Criminal Justice and a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice Administration. When he retired in 1998, he was serving as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
Back in civilian life, Kenny further advanced his law enforcement career, taking on a variety of major crime investigation assignments, from being part of a narcotics task force, engaging in enhanced criminal operations, and serving as superintendent of operations. Prior to his election to the office of sheriff in 2003, he was employed with the Department of Public Safety, Investigations Division (Major Crimes) and Parole and Probation (offender supervision).
Since taking office, Sheriff Furlong has introduced several new programs and reinstated a few from the past, the most visible being Volunteers in Policing, the chaplain's program, and a revitalized reserve program. Significant organizational additions include a regional gang unit, a special enforcement team, and a school resource officer program.
Sheriff Furlong has taken a leadership role in putting on many community events, from the National Night Out and the Cops-n-Kids Spaghetti Dinner to the Sheriff’s Open House/Street Fair. He actively supports numerous community organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club, the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Carson Community Counseling, Rotary, CASI, the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association and the Nevada Humane Society. His leisure interests include cars, motorcycles, sports, and boating.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, December 5th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Sheriff Furlong's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30.
