Keeping our school kids healthy enough for school
The Carson City School Board Tuesday night gave staff the green light to explore setting up a medical clinic for Carson City Schools children who come to school not healthy enough to be effective learners.
The program is called “Communities in School” (CIS) and through partnerships with federal and state governments, private agencies and non-profits already serving some disadvantaged children, CIS helps to ensure that children with temporary health problems, lack of proper nutrition, troubled situations at home or other impediments that get in the way of learning, are dealt with.
The proposed site of such a center is Empire Elementary School which has the greatest need. However, other students that need help would be transported to Empire Elementary from schools throughout the district. A CIS representative said such centers are now operating in Las Vegas and Elko area schools. They are a nationwide organization with centers across the country. She said parental involvement is required component to the program.
The Board appointed Trustees Joanna Wilson and Lynne Conrad to explore the program with an eye to instituting it this school year, since the need for such a program is acute, especially during these hard economic times.
