Events around the capital city Wednesday, Nov. 6 include gallery showings, a Veterans Day assembly at Sierra Lutheran High School, the first "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation, "Nevada’s Ancient Rock Art: Art for All Times" hosted by Capital City Arts Initiative, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

Carson City Navy League to celebrate Veterans

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November meeting. We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Captain Evan Morrison, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Fallon.

Veteran Advocate and Humanitarian Ronald Gutzman

Ronald Gutzman passed peacefully on 10/23/2019 at the age of 84. He served in the marine corps as a control tower operator, graduated with two master’s in mathematics and became a principal for Las Vegas school district in 1963. Ron was involved in copious organizations and groups such as the Disabled Veterans of America, Marine Corps League, and American Legion member where he tirelessly advocated for veterans.

Senator Square: Walmart awards Carson High School cheerleaders $5,000 grant

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

The results of the Carson High Schol HOSA Future Health Professionals career display winners are in, and the 1st Place winners are Faith Luis and Ava Ponczoch, 2nd Place are Millie Arroyo and Julia Kaiser, and 3rd Place winners are Brooklyn Robertson and Nick Batien.

Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter Game Watch

Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter will host a game watch of the Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., in Carson City.

The game, televised live from London, will be shown on three TV screens. New members are welcome to watch with the veterans, and are welcome to join. Membership is $20 per person.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of jam-packed activities over the next three days. Events include the 100th annual Candy Dance in Genoa, the Carson City Community Center Garage Sale, free walks at Nevada State Parks, Virginia City’s Street Vibrations Fall Rally, the 31st annual All-Breed Dog Shows, The Beatles Flashback tribute band concert and much more!

Jamming into the midweek, events lined up for Wednesday, Sept. 25 around the capital city include a Carson City Chamber's Soup's On luncheon with a primer on blockchain. The Northern Nevada Development Authority will host its monthly Business Edge meeting at Casino Fandango with a focus on Nevada's energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives. Also happening: Fusion cooking classes at Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton headquarters, plus the Veterans Resource Group will make a visit to the Dayton Food Pantry. There's also a Wine and Moondance Chocolate Pairing at Expresso Yourself inside the Brewery Arts Center, plus art workshops and showings, Salsa dancing and more.

Healthy Communities Coalition announces its new initative to host representatives from different veterans resource groups once a month at each of its volunteer-powered food pantries in Lyon County. TMCC Veterans Upward Bound shared information at the Yerington Food Pantry on September 18th. They will be on hand at the Dayton Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday, September 25 from noon to 4pm. They will also be at the Silver Stage Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday October 2 from 1pm-4pm.

Rupert’s Auto Body donated a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze to the Sheriff’s Office VIPS for Vets program to support the growing need for transportation services for local veterans. The VIPS for Vets program has grown tremendously over the past two years as it serves to accommodate day-to-day errands for homebound veterans. Carson City’s veterans will continue to have the reassurance in knowing they can rely on VIPS for Vets transport if needed. With the addition of the new reliable vehicle, this service can help more veterans travel greater distances.

On Thursday morning, a military convoy led by veterans and military enthusiasts stopped at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City after having already driven 150 miles that morning.

Each flight of stairs in the Carson City campus's Cedar Building includes photos, exhibits and a list of those who lost their lives in the Pentagon, the flights and the Twin Towers on this tragic day, 18 years ago.

Cross-country convoy of vintage military vehicles plans stop at Carson City museum
