Dozens of military veterans, families and community members saluted the fallen during the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony at Mills Park Saturday.

The ceremony was presented by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

"Today we share a few moments with our fellow veterans, family and friends to reflect on what that war meant and what it means to us today,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

Local musicians will bring their voices and talents to A to Zen to raise funds to help support services for Carson City’s homeless.

Singers, songwriters, musicians and more will play throughout the day on Saturday, March 30, 1 to 9:30 p.m.

Donations raised will benefit RCIL and The Do Drop In, a local nonprofit that provides a place for homeless residents to spend their time and receive important job and living resources.

American military veterans, families, friends and the community are invited to the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony this Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City.

Tickets are going fast for the 3nd Annual Nowruz “New Year” Celebration Feast to benefit Veterans Healing Camp on Saturday, March 30 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Casino Fandango Grand Ballroom in Carson City. Nowruz is the ancient Persian “New Year” celebrated since 1700 B.C. that occurs on the first day of spring at the vernal equinox. This year, Veterans Healing Camp adds new excitement to the holiday with authentic Elvis impersonator, “Jelvis,” in addition to the two live music acts.

About 20 military veterans commit suicide every day in the United States, a number that has been holding steady in recent years.

10 a.m. — Reno Event Center doors opens

10:10 a.m. — Veterans officially “Welcomed Home” and thanked for their service. They, and the public are invited to avail themselves of services and outreach opportunities provided by veteran service organizations in Northern Nevada. Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host a “Watershed Walk” hiking tour this Saturday, March 9 beginning at 1 p.m. at Riverview Park.

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program will host its second Reaching For Zero: A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Brunch on Saturday, April 13 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

Carson Valley Senior Living and Memory Care donated 50 percent of the community’s total move-in fees from November and December 2018 to the Wounded Warrior Project. The amount totaled $3,750.

The Wounded Warrior Project is a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans of the military actions following September 11, 2001.

Capital City Arts Initiative’s relationship with Carson High School made it possible for Caleb Cage, a West Point graduate, U.S. Army veteran and author to visit with CHS students where he read one of his short stories from his 2017 book "Desert Mementos: Stories of Iraq and Nevada" and then fielded questions about writing and his background.

Pleases join Carson City Republican Women at their upcoming Tuesday, Feb. 19 meeting to hear guest speakers Nancy Paulson, Carson City Manager and Sheriff Ken Furlong. Ms. Paulson will reflect on the current and future status of Carson City and Sheriff Furlong will provide an update on recent homicides. Social hour begins at 11:00 a.m. and the meeting is called to order at 11:30 a.m. in the Casino Fandango Ballroom.

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City.

Our Dinner and Meeting will be held in the Juniper Room this month. The Social hour will start at 5:30 p.m. and Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Thanks to the Nevada Enrichment Program Grant, Life Skills Trainer Monica Marcinko from Accessible Space, Inc., is now able to offer free life skill classes to the community. The classes are open to all adults with special needs, seniors, veterans, etc.

On Tuesday, February 26, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a public event by writer Caleb Cage. Cage will read from his collection of short stories, "Desert Mementos: Stories of Iraq and Nevada." The event is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6pm at the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Cage preceding the event at 5:30pm. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Piggy-backing off a successful Veterans Integration Program at Warm Springs Correctional Center, Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center is now helping NNCC educate its prisoners through the college.
