Carson City hosts resource fair for homeless as part of annual 'Point-in-Time Count'

Each year, a national “Point-in-Time Count” is conducted in any community that receives U.S Housing and Urban Development funds as a way to figure out how many people are suffering from homelessness in each community in order to better apply resources.

Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell delivers his last ‘State of the City’ address

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

Chinese New Year, Carson Comedy Club's military appreciation night, live music and more: Carson City region readies for weekend

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Carson City's Richards Crossing residents receive gift giveaway from Red Hat Society

The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.

End of an Era: Creator and founder of Downtown Carson City Santa Parade retires

For 20 years I have been bringing Christmas events to Downtown Carson City, beginning in 2000 when I had my retail store on Telegraph Square with Santa and his real reindeer. The Santa Parade was created in 2007 and was always the Saturday after the Silver and Snowflake festival originating at Telegraph Square to bring awareness to the existing businesses in the area.

Over 2,000 Books Collected for Affordable Housing Property Residents

Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) and United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) completed a successful book drive during October, which is National Housing American Month. The “At Home With Reading” Book Drive, a joint effort that collected more than 2,000 books, benefitted the residents of NRHA’s nine northern Nevada affordable housing properties.

Carson City Veterans to hold Spaghetti Feed, Silent Auction on Dec.13

Western Nevada Wildcat Veterans are partnering with Wildcat Den Café for a Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Dec. 13 in Carson Nugget Hall.

The cost is $10 per plate and the feed and auction will happen from 3 to 8 p.m.

The majority of donations collected will go toward providing a financial hardship gift for veterans attending WNC. The remaining donation funds will be used to support the club’s future events.

Nevada's JOIN Inc. wins $175K Google training program grant, additional $125K up for grabs

CARSON CITY — JOIN Inc. was one of five Nevada organizations chosen to receive a $175,000 investment from Google.org for its innovative proposal to create economic opportunity in the community. JOIN Inc. will launch Career Bound NV Success Skills, a training program designed to ensure Northern Nevadans have access to basic technology and employability skills training needed for successful employment.

Officially designated 1P/Halley, this is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 year and is the only known short-period comet that is visible to the naked eye from Earth and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Some way, somehow higher roads need to be taken and it needs to start with our ruling political class.
