Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. Retired Carson City teacher and longtime animal welfare advocate Lisa Schuette has announced her candidacy for Carson City Supervisor Ward 4. She is running for the seat currently held by John Barrette who is not seeking another term.

Rumors about a potential outbreak of dog lice in two Carson City dog parks went through social media last week and early this week, but according to David Navarro, Parks Operation Superintendent for Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, those rumors are unsubstantiated.

For those returning from the three-day holiday weekend, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks; it is the final day of early voting for the Nevada caucus, plus there's the Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show at its gallery in the Brewery Arts Center, classes at Yaple's Ballroom, meetings and more.

Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is having a Cottonwood Wrapping volunteer event! We will be installing mesh wire around the base of Cottonwood trees to protect them from being damaged by beavers.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

The Fuji Park playground adjacent to the Fuji Park Dog Park has been closed due to repairs, according to David Navarro, Parks Operations Superintendent from the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, and is set to be reopened sometime in March, although the time frame is dependent on an order of new parts for the playground.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host its February Full Moon Hike this Saturday on the South end of Prison Hill. The hike will be a glow stick adventure featuring the "Snow Moon," Ghost Rock and plenty of beautiful terrain.

Carson City is at the center of a legal dispute following its refusal to allow hemp to be grown on property in the Buzzys Ranch area in East Carson City. Tahoe Hemp is suing for $15 million in damages citing the city broke its agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust, which gives rights to the family to use the property for agricultural purposes.

The Parks Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing earlier this week of Sandy Osheroff, the Foundation’s longtime Treasurer.

Parks Foundation president, David Johnson, announced on Friday that the Foundation’s Board of Directors, continuing the Foundation’s practice of recognizing outstanding contributions in furtherance of Carson City’s parks, recreational facilities and open space, designated Sandy Osheroff as the “2020 Volunteer of the Years” at their December meeting.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

Carson City area citizens spent their MLK Day in the canyons near East Silver Saddle Ranch cleaning up dumpsites. In total, more than 50 volunteers removed 7,080 pounds of trash from the natural area. Items of all kinds were taken out of the canyons including plastic bottles, tires, yard trimmings, toys, and even kitchen sinks.

Douglas County has multiple priority projects on the books right now, including education innovation, distinctive downtowns, becoming an aviation destinations and more, but one in particular has it’s roots set firmly in the Carson valley’s history of agriculture, and that is "Agrihoods."

County managers representing Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Churchill and Mineral counties gathered Wednesday in Carson City as a part of Northern Nevada Development Authority's annual “State of the Counties” meeting.

The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range will be closed for construction starting Jan. 27, 2020. For safety reasons, all shooting activities, including reservations and public use, are canceled during construction. The construction schedule is anticipated to last approximately 10 weeks, although it will be contingent on weather conditions.

Heading into Monday and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday we're looking at cloudy skies with a daytime high around 50 degrees. City, state and federal offices are closed as are schools. Friends of the Carson City Library's Browser's Book Store at 711 East Washington St., is open from noon to 5 p.m. Activities around the capital city include a canyon area cleanup hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, swing dance lessons and more. The Andersen Ranch Estates project was discussed at length — almost four hours in fact — at Thursday’s Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting, before being approved by the board on a 4-1 vote.

The Andersen Ranch Estates Subdivision will be one topic of discussion at the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 16.

The proposed development plan for the new subdivision was approved at the December planning commission meeting, during which the commission recommended approval of the project map with a 4-2 vote, with one vote absent.

The Board of Supervisors will review the Andersen Ranch Estates Tentative Map this Thursday, January 16th.  The special session starts at 5:30pm at the Sierra Room of the Community Center at 851 Williams Street, Carson City.


If you were involved with the Vintage project, you will know that the same players under a different owner, Christy Corp., will be presenting their application at the Board of Supervisors’ meeting.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will host their next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

On the docket for discussion items include a report on deaths occurring at the Carson City Jail, a discussion about restricting religious use at the Brewery Arts Center, presentations of length of service awards, and more.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host January's Full Moon Hike on the Wild Horse Trail this Friday, Jan. 10. Not only will the hike feature some wild horses and the "Wolf Moon" it will also be a celebration of Carson City's first Winter Trails Day.
