As many of you know, May is National Bike Month. Here in Carson City, several events and rides were held, capped by Bike To Work Week from May 16-20 and the celebration on the 20th outside the Firkin & Fox. As reported, about 150 people came by to visit, enjoy others’ bikes, and get a chance to win a raffle prize. The Nevada Legislature passed two bills in its current session that benefit cyclists (see sidebar below).

Floating down the Carson River in a raft on a semi-warm spring day, the beauty of blooming wildflowers dotting the canyon walls, it's easy to forget the sometimes-bad reputation this area has attained over the years.

Except for the gunfire.

State tourism and Carson City officials are anxious to show off the new Carson River Canyon, a place being transformed into a destination for whitewater adventure and sightseeing, rather than a dumping ground for homeless people and appliances.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors this week will consider whether to hire a special deputy district attorney to represent the public works department after a construction firm contracted to do $1.9 million in work has claimed overriding costs of $1.7 million.

About 3.5 miles of frontage that amounts to 419 acres along the Carson River corridor was sealed into protection thanks to the voter-approved Question 1 initiative and Carson City's own Question 18 Quality of Life Initiative.

A partnership for the purchase, appraised at $3.1 million, was created between Carson City, the Nevada Land Conservancy, the Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway and private landowner John Serpa.

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.

Construction near the intersection of Northridge Drive and Russell Way in Carson City prompted a Carson Now reader to ask what kind of work is being done in the area.

The reader writes: "What is going on with the protected wetlands area north of Northridge Street between the freeway to the east and behind the houses on Eastridge to the west? It looks like they are trying to fill it in with dirt with the equipment that arrived this morning. All public access was closed off as of Monday. Please investigate and report."

CARSON CITY – The neighborhoods of this capital city and the Washoe Valley just to the north are ground zero for one of the most fiercely contested state legislative races in Nevada this year.
Potentially at stake is the makeup of the 42-member Assembly and whether Democrats can sustain their dominance of the lower house with a 28-member, veto-proof majority.

AUSTIN, Nev. — It’s not often you’ll find a classic historic mining town full of options for the more active traveler. Austin, Nevada is not only a living ghost town and a cultural heritage get-away but it has a multitude of adventurous options including hiking, mountain bike trails and more. Founded in 1862 during the silver rush, the town is located exactly in the center of the state along the Pony Express route on Highway 50 on the western slopes of the Toiyabe Range at elevation 6,605 feet.

The Nevada Appeal has a story about the residents of Clear Creek Road putting up a gate to shut out public access.

This has been a long-simmering issue. You can't really blame the residents, who are trying to protect themselves from liability if someone gets hurt on this private road, which provides access to popular hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and picnic areas.

Parks & Rec director Roger Moellendorf passed on word today that the city closed the deal on the $3.7 million, 370-acre Jarrard Ranch.

Now, before anybody throws a fit about how can the city afford to spend this money when they have a hole in their budget, this money comes from the open space fund that was established by voters and can't be used for anything else.

We have some good news to share in these not-so-good economic times, especially when it comes to development and housing.
Construction will begin soon on a $3.6 million, 42-unit senior apartment complex in Carson City that will help to close the gap in a shortage of affordable retirement housing here.

Carson City Board of Supervisors have a heavy agenda this week as they try to close a $10 million budget deficit.

Carson City Supervisor Pete Livermore has filed for the Republican nomination for Assembly District 40. Livermore, 68, is termed out after 12 years on the Board of Supervisors.
