Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the new $4 million Carson City Animal Shelter in preparation for the facility's Oct. 8 grand opening.

It isn't every day you find a dog willing to do something for a cat.

But that's exactly what happened Sunday morning at Riverview Park off East Fifth Street in Carson City when dozens of canines and their humans participated in CASI's annual 5K9 Run/Walk.

Whoa doggy, what a weekend. Dayton Valley Days, the Steampunk Ball and Parade in Virginia City, and the Western Heritage Festival at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park are just the tip of the iceberg. Sunday, September 18, 2016 is the date for the 5th annual

Who doesn’t love a good football game? Even better, who doesn’t love a good tailgate party? Nevada Humane Society is always up for a good time, so this year the cats and dogs are taking it to the next level — by hosting a TAILgate Party at the shelter now through Monday, Sept. 19.

Please join the Carson Tahoe SPCA and Cafe At Adele's for Paws on the Veranda Saturday, Sept. 17. Bring your four legged friend for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and the Carson Tahoe SPCA will be on hand with homemade treats and lots of other surprises! A portion of your check will be donated to their spay and neuter fund for the homeless animals that come into our care. A perfect day to dine with your dog!

Wylie Animal Rescue holds a cat adoption event every Saturday from 11am to 4pm at the Petco on Topsy Lane in Carson City. But, this Saturday we will also have kittens for adoption at Tractor Supply in Minden and Carson City locations from 10am to 3pm.

* Cats range in ages from kittens to seniors.
* All our cats are fixed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.
* Our volunteers are available to answer any questions and assist you in selecting the perfect feline(s) for your household.

In case you missed it, the Washoe County Health District recently put out a notice that multiple bats infected with rabies were found in Washoe County.

In one of the cases, four domestic pets came into contact with one of the rabid bats. It’s a situation no one wants to think about, and one that hasn’t happened in Washoe County in decades, but it’s time to remind people about the importance of vaccinating their pets and why it’s so important to everyone around you.

Recently, a senior Chihuahua named Dash was reunited with his family — after eight years — all thanks to a microchip.

He had gone missing as a pup from his own backyard, apparently spent time with another family in between, then once again wound up lost. He did have a microchip, but his person had moved out of state and reaching her took longer than anticipated.

Are you ready for the new school year? One last weekend of summer break before the kids of Carson City head back, so make the most of it. Jazz and Beyond takes it up a notch in its final few days with eight hours of non-stop music downtown. Western Nevada College new soccer team plays its first home game today against Folsom Lake Community College. If you follow anything about us you know that right now is duck season. Not real ducks, but little, bright yellow, rubber ducks. 30,000 of them to be exact. Recently, they descended upon Reno and are now completing Duckie Boot Camp as they train for the big day — when they race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. Construction of the new Carson City Animal Services shelter at the corner of Airport Road and Butti Way is progressing, said Carson City Public Works Director Darren Shulz, with completion scheduled for early October.

Hunter Pence continued his AAA assault last night in Reno by hitting his second home run in as many nights at once again a Giants' friendly Greater Nevada Field.

I think he loves the thin air and elevation.

Pence came into the game batting a modest .500 (8 for 16) and added 2 more RBI to his total since being on his rehab assignment giving him 6 in 6 games. It was his third home run since being with Sacramento.

Pence played a full nine innings for a second straight night which have a lot of people believing his return to San Francisco is extremely close.

Casino Fandango is airing the 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes, today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kick off a weekend full of classic cars with Cruise Night at the Carson Mall with food trucks, kids activities, and more. Westside Pour House is the new home of the weekly ‘Geeks Who Drink’ Pub Quiz, so gather your smartest friends for a fun night of trivia, libations, and good food.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Recently, one of our directors was travelling and saw a fun billboard (on the east coast, not local) advertising super heroes. It gave her an idea. She came back to me and we began to brainstorm. Super heroes can be from any walk of life, have any personality, and be any age.

It’s kitten season and Catmandu would like to remind cat owners to please be responsible and spay or neuter your pets. There are already far more cats and kittens than homes for them; and the babies just keep coming.

Summer nights were made for outdoor concerts. Bring a chair and enjoy All Hat, No Cattle at Dangberg Home Ranch Historical Park. The annual Reno Corvette Club Show and Shine will give you something to drool over. The Capital City Community Band is performing two concerts this weekend: one in Carson City, one in Gardnerville, and both accompanied by an ice cream social. Keep reading for even more Sunday fun.

Severe cuteness alert! Nevada Humane Society is waiving adoption fees on all adult cats for three days only, this weekend, July 15 through 17. You can adopt an adult cat for free — choose from young cats, old cats, skinny cats, fat cats, cute cats or ugly cats! There are spotted cats, striped cats, white cats and black cats. They all need to find a home — YOUR home! Standard adoption policies apply.

On July 27 at 7:05 PM the Reno Aces will play the Sacramento River Cats on the Greater Nevada Field in Reno. As a way to raise money for the Carson City Library, the Friends of the Carson City Library are currently selling ticket vouchers at $16 for Left Field Reserve.
