Over the last two months in Northern Nevada, there have been 80 new cases of canine influenza reported.

Happy Anniversary to Nevada Humane Society in Carson City. One year ago, on Oct. 4, 2016, a brand new animal shelter opened in Carson City. Since then, more than 850 dogs, cats and small animals have found amazing new homes.

Each day, Nevada Humane Society has dozens of cats and kittens arrive at the shelter. This time of year, those numbers are especially high — and right now your help is needed as the supply of cat and kitten food is running critically low.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The dog days of August are almost over, but Saturday went to the dogs anyway at the Nevada Humane Society in Carson City to celebrate National Dog Day.

After a 4-0 victory against the Sacramento River Cats, the Reno Aces reclaimed their Pacific Coast League Division lead, putting them one-game up on the Fresno Grizzlies. Aces starting pitcher Ivan Pineyro took the mound looking to extend division lead against southpaw Andrew Suarez.

Today, Tuesday we recognize the second year passing of Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell. On Saturday, an all-day music lineup featuring nationally recognized artists is expected to draw thousands to Battle Born Harley-Davidson, the site of the inaugural Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival.

Nevada Humane Society in Carson City will offer a new clinic beginning this week to allow for low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. The clinic is part of the new Carson City Animal Shelter operated by NHS that opened October 2016.

Carson City Parks and Recreation is hosting a night with the Reno Aces on Friday, August 18. This Friday is the deadline to purchase tickets for a summer evening with family and friends while taking in America’s favorite pastime at the Greater Nevada Field in Reno.

Kitten Adoption Day is Saturday, July 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at Michael Hohl Honda in Carson City. Catmandu is partnering with Honda to help disadvantaged cats and kittens find their FURever homes.

The National Feeding Pets of the Homeless Give a Dog a Bone week returns for its eighth year, August 6-12, 2017. The Carson City based nonprofit organization Pets of the Homeless, focused exclusively on feeding and providing veterinary care to pets of the homeless, leads the charge across the country to collect pet food from the public.

CATMANDU is in desperate need of foster homes for bottle feeding kittens that require around-the-clock care. We also need foster homes for adult and special needs cats. Provisions supplied if needed. While thousands will gather Tuesday night at Mills Park in Carson City to watch the 4th of July fireworks display, the Nevada Humane Society urges pet owners to keep their furry friends away from the thunderous booms and flashing sparks of rockets shot into the air.

Fireworks can be quite overwhelming, and possibly hazardous and even life-threatening to pets, according to the Nevada Humane Society.

There will be a volunteer and planning meeting this Tuesday night to prepare for the Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival and VIP dinner. The volunteer meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m., at Battle Born Harley-Davidson, 2900 Research Way, Carson City.

Tickets are available for a Aug. 18, 2017 VIP Celebrity Dinner the night before the Aug. 19 Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival in Carson City.

The special VIP evening dinner at Empire Ranch Golf Course, is for people to meet and mingle with the celebrities, athletes and musicians who will be in Carson City to honor fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell, said organizer Don Alexander, who formed the nonprofit The Last Respond Fund, to raise money for the Howell family.

Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities, free-roaming, feral cats in Carson City can now be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped for free as part of Nevada Humane Society’s Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Though we always expect it, we can never predict when emergency situations will happen — though it often seems to happen early in the evenings.
