Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Let’s get ducky! Nevada Humane Society’s Duck Race & Festival is swimming back for a 7th year with a goal to adopt 30,000 rubber ducks to benefit homeless pets! Adopt a duck now then spend an exciting day in the park to cheer on their duck as they race down the Truckee River.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

SATURDAY:

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

It usually happens once a year — a big, community wide, fee-waived pet adoption event. The goal? To get a large number of animals into loving homes all at one time while freeing up much needed space in the shelters.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit has adopted Catmandu as this year’s 13th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge (Black Cat 13) charity. The Motor Unit will be raising funds through t-shirt sales and donations at the event scheduled for June 24-25 at Mills Park.

Let’s go to the Fair, Carson City. Mills Park is hopping with activity: a carnival, car show, exhibits, music, and a return of the Rendezvous. If you have kids, don’t miss this month’s Young Eagle Flights at the Carson Airport, just make sure to sign up by 8 a.m. Start your day at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, and don’t forget to make your artistic mark on a handcrafted bowl for the Empty Bowls event. A flea from a yellow pine chipmunk in the Lake Tahoe area has tested positive for plague according to El Dorado County health officials.

The flea was sampled from one of three rodents trapped in the Fallen Leaf Campground area during routine plague surveillance May 18, 2016.

"I’m Alexia. I’m an Angel Pet.” This statement is just the beginning of a special adoption campaign at Nevada Humane Society in Carson City.

Featuring nearly two dozen cats and dogs with unique conditions, Angel Pets highlight those who are in need of a loving home even more than anyone else — and from June 2 through June 12, you can visit with these precious pets and fall in love yourself, thanks to a grant provided by the ASPCA.*

Thanks to those who came forward and helped, the “CLOSED” sign has been taken down and Catmandu will re-open in a limited capacity starting on Friday, June 3.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Residents in Carson City now have an option for spaying and neutering feral cats. A mobile veterinary clinic, specially designed for spay/neuter services, was recently built for Nevada Humane Society thanks to a grant which covered the cost of the vehicle.

You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. The early spring farmers market downtown, the Cops and Kids event at the Sheriff’s Department, and the Annual Relay for Life at Mills Park are still a good time. Catmandu has closed the gates and is not taking in any more cats or kittens at this time. Unless Carson City and the surrounding communities open their wallets and start providing support, the facility will likely not re-open.

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Pets of the Homeless and its partners are hosting a free wellness clinic. The clinic will be on a first come, first serve basis for the first 100 pets. There will be free vaccinations, exams, pet food, supplies and nail trims.
The event is Saturday, May 21, 2016 beginning at 9 a.m. at FISH, 138 East Long St., Carson City.

Forgive me in advance because this is extremely personal but I felt it was something all of us can relate to. So many amazing people adopt senior pets from Nevada Humane Society, and we all know that many of them live long into their teens. Some of us raise them as newborns with them by our side for years. Inevitably, the end will always come, but my recent struggle was how do you know when to say goodbye?

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Catmandu will have fabulous items for the special Mom in your life at our Craft Fair booth at Carson Mall on May 5, 6, and 7. Handmade pottery, gift baskets, wine baskets, new jewelry, and many other wonderful items will be available. With the kitten season in full swing this is an important fundraiser to pay for vaccinations, spay/neuter, vet checks, as well as food and shelter for these sweet little kitties. We have wonderful adult cats available for adoption too! Please support Catmandu and give your mom something special at the same time!

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

Into every life a little rain must fall, and we just got plenty. The tulips and lilac blooming around town will be pleased. Unfortunately, it could make for soggy feet if you’ve got any outdoor activities planned. Lucky for us, plenty of fun can be found indoors. Hit the Carson Mall for Cowgirls and Lipstick or learn about rare coins at the Nevada State Museum. Picture this. A group of male prisoners (big, burly guys) and a group of tiny, tabby kittens (weighing about three ounces), meeting each other for the first time at the Warm Springs Correctional Center. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and everyone is settling in for the night. It’s calm and quiet.

Suddenly the men are alert, turning all warm and fuzzy, cooing and using baby talk — they are melting at the sight of newborn kittens. Don’t judge, you would react this way too.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College.
