This Tuesday, Feb. 4, join the Carson City Classic Cinema Club for a film presentation of the 1941 screwball romance "The Lady Eve."

Happy Saturday Carson City, and say hello to February! That means Spring must be right around the corner! I hope so at least, because Friday’s beautiful weather was enough to make me ready to say goodbye to father winter.

We’ve got a jam packed list of events throughout the weekend, including February’s wine walk happening today!

Saturday, February 1

Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. Combined with championship football festivities on Sunday, the Silver State is in store for a wild, good time.

With some clouds, sunshine and a weekend warmup ahead, going into the last Thursday of January brings a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, library activities, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, a South Carson Street pre-construction meeting at the Carson City Community Center that will be streamed live by going here. If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen, hips, legs, arms, as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you! It also has a strong mind/body connection that gives you an low impact targeted core workout.

You’ll get stronger with more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility which can give you a better sense of well being all around.

Heading into the middle of the work week and the final three of January, the capital city can expect a slight cool down weather wise with some sunshine and clouds. Events Wednesday include art showings, music, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

Heading into the last Monday of January 2020, we're looking at sunny skies and a warm-up, with highs in the low 50s. Activities around the capital city include a a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, a free Partnership Carson City Yoga class at the Carson City Community Center, art activities and showings, swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more. Last week, I wrote about overwhelm and how to approach it. But, there’s one part of the process of overcoming overwhelm that will trip you up if you don’t understand it - setting priorities.

Priorities fall under a number of categories:

• Critical priority. (Example: Something that has to be done in 24 hours, often has a consequence if not done)
• The deadline is approaching. (Example: Hard deadline, no moving it, often has penalties for missing)

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

On Thursday morning, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada was presented with a donation of $1,500 by the Nevada Artist’s Association to help with the cost of art programs at the club.

Hitting the halfway mark of the shortened work week, Wednesday events around town include Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge monthly meeting, "State of the Counties" at Casino Fandango, a Capital City Arts Initiative reception for the "Photo Finished 2020" exhibition featuring the works of 9 Carson High School students, a Bee City USA Carson City meeting at the community center, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, and more.

Heading into Monday and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday we're looking at cloudy skies with a daytime high around 50 degrees. City, state and federal offices are closed as are schools. Friends of the Carson City Library's Browser's Book Store at 711 East Washington St., is open from noon to 5 p.m. Activities around the capital city include a canyon area cleanup hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, swing dance lessons and more. The first significant winter storm of 2020 will be blowing into the region Thursday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy snow in the Sierra and 1-2 inches of snow possible in the lower valleys. Events lined up include a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, art showings, the kickoff of an After school Art 2020 program at the BAC, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library and more.

Enjoy the sunny weather and a brief calm Wednesday morning through early evening before gusty winds blow into the region overnight, bringing rain and snow to the valleys and heavy snow to the Sierra by Thursday. Midweek events around town include the New Year's Show featured by the Nevada Artists Association, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at Carson City Library and more.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will host their next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

On the docket for discussion items include a report on deaths occurring at the Carson City Jail, a discussion about restricting religious use at the Brewery Arts Center, presentations of length of service awards, and more.

Moving forward to the first day of the work week, we're looking at sunny skies then blustery conditions Monday night and a slight chance of snow showers in the valleys into Tuesday morning. Activities around the capital city include the opening of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum, the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bennet, plus a free yoga class at the community center and more. At the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisor's meeting, a discussion regarding the reconveyance of the property housing the Brewery Arts Center from the city to the BAC itself will be held, so long as any religious activity will continue to be prohibited at the site.

Activities around town include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center, exhibits, showings, Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents "Captain Blood" at the BAC Performance Hall, dance and exercise classes at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Heading into Monday and moving forward to the first full week of 2020 we're looking at mostly sunny skies and a daytime high near 50. Activities lined include the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, organizers of the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign will give a presentation, art activities, plus a free yoga class at the Community Center and more. With almost 15 percent of the population of Carson City being at least 65 years of age or older, the Brewery Arts Center announces its newest project geared towards that sector, School of Rock: Senior Years.

This exciting new program will begin in January of 2020 and BAC will train, house and facilitate a choir who will learn and perform rock, pop, hip-hop and surf music comprised entirely of people over the age of 65. The choir will meet in our beautiful Grand Ballroom under the direction of James Rossi.
