Climate change pioneer, former NASA Goddard director keynotes 2015 Tahoe weather conference
Dr. James E. Hansen, former director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and adjunct professor at Columbia University's Earth Institute, will address television meteorologists, media and the public as the keynote speaker at Operation Sierra Storm, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, 9 a.m. at Harveys Lake Tahoe.
Dr. Hansen’s presentation will include his take on assuring real progress on climate — whether and how an international climate accord can achieve intergenerational and global justice. He’s recognized for speaking truth to power, for identifying ineffectual policies as greenwash, and for outlining actions the public must take to protect future generations and other life. At Columbia, he directs a program in Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions.
His seminal testimony on climate change to congressional committees in the 1980s helped raise broad awareness of the global warming issue. He was designated by Time Magazine in 2006 as one of the 100 most influential people on Earth. He elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1995 and has received numerous awards including the Carl-Gustaf Rossby and Roger Revelle Research Medals, the Sophie Prize and the Blue Planet Prize.
Bernice Notenboom, climate journalist, science writer will also share her latest excursions of the fragile North Pole and discuss her new film that is soon to be released, “The Arctic March.”
The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, event sponsors and partners are inviting the community, visitors and media to attend free of charge. RSVP encouraged, email results@weidingerpr.com. Info: www.osstahoe.com.
